Position Summary: The Specialty Nurse functions under the direction of the Specialty Clinic Charge Nurse. The Specialty Nurse provides direct patient care and care management that aligns with specialists and specialty clinics affiliated with Alaska Native Medical Center and YKHC. The Specialty Nurse is responsible for the delivery of patient care at the moment the patient enters a Specialty Clinic by collecting patient information, patient evaluation and assessment, performing preliminary specimen collection and/or testing per standing and direct orders, administering medications and immunizations per standing orders and educating patients. During the intake process, the Specialty Nurse gathers pertinent information regarding current symptoms, medical history, and medications in order to assist in plans of care, and will schedule follow up appointments as needed. The Specialty Nurse is responsible for the care of all patients from two years old through elderly, and is able to apply age specific considerations and cultural diversity with the delivery of care. As needed, the Specialty Nurse assists in managing the Outpatient Nurse Clinic. The Specialty Nurse collaborates with the Medical Staff to plan, direct, coordinate and evaluate Nurse Clinic services for patients within the Nurse Clinic based on nursing practice standards, in order to achieve the best possible patient outcomes thus fostering quality, continuity and appropriate utilization of health care resources throughout the continuum of care. When working the Nurse Clinic, the Specialty Nurse must report any patient problems or potential issues outside the scope of practice directly to the provider on duty. Effective communication with all team members, patients, and patient representatives such as family members is essential.  Must have excellent documentation of all pertinent patient medical details. Must adhere to privacy laws, including HIPAA, to maintain patient confidentiality. Expected to ensure the facilities are clean and will prevent the spread of disease by sanitizing and maintaining all equipment and using universal precautions. Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education: Must have completed a program of education in nursing from an NLN approved institution.  ADN required, BSN preferred.

Minimum Experience: At least two years prior experience, prefer primary care, urgent care and/or fast track.  Will consider training qualified persons.

License, Certification, Registration: Must have an active, unencumbered license in the State of Alaska as a Registered Nurse.  Current BLS.

Equipment/Tools/Word-Aids: Office machines (i.e. computer, copier, fax, telephone, Microsoft Office, etc.) and basic medical equipment.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills: Able to practice nursing as described in the Alaska Statutes for the practice of Registered Nursing.  Able to utilize the nursing process in the provision of patient care.  Ability to perform independently within scope of practice.  Able to administer treatments, medications, interpret diagnostic tests, provide patient/family/significant other education.  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None.
