Position Summary: (Sterile Processing Technician I): Under direct/indirect supervision follows approved infection control, quality assurance and departmental policies and procedures. Collects, cleans, decontaminates, disinfects, and/or sterilizes surgical instruments, trays and packs, reusable medical devices and patient care equipment for Inpatient Nursing and Clinics. Inventories, restocks, and distributes instruments, reusable medical equipment and medical supplies to all service areas. Works a majority of time in a Sterile Processing Department cleaning, preparing, assembling, sterilizing, preparing packs, instruments, and trays for all service areas. Will process operating room instruments. May assist in departmental in-services and training. 
 
Work time is split between Scrub Tech duties and Sterile Processing. 
 
(Scrub Technician Duties): A technician who performs varied duties as an integral surgical team member under the direction of the RN. Participates in the full spectrum of surgical, diagnostic, and manipulative procedures; and plans, organizes, and prepares for the technical needs of the surgical procedure. Performs preoperative procedures such as selection and placement of appropriate surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment; to scrub and provide instruments, sutures, and other sterile supplies during surgical procedures Performs routine scrub as well as specifically delegated duties according to AORN standards and established policies and procedures of the Department of Surgery
Completion of surgical technician program or equivalent experience. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of surgical principles, including aseptic techniques and universal precautions throughout all phases of operative procedures. Previous OR Scrub Tech experience preferred.
 
Position Qualifications:
  • Minimum Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.  One-year experience in a medical setting required.
  • Minimum Experience: Completion of surgical technician program or equivalent experience. Previous OR Scrub Tech experience preferred.
  • License, Certification, Registration: None required. 
  • Equipment/Tools: Responsible to learn to distinguish all equipment dealt with in Surgery.
  • Specialized Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge or willingness to learn sterilization procedures, equipment, instruments, wrapping and repackaging of instruments. Knowledge or willingness to learn inventory system and maintain adequate inventory levels of supplies and equipment within the surgical department.
