Recreation Specialist II - $2507 - $3103 – DOQ


Definition:  The purpose of this position is to operate indoor and outdoor athletic and recreation programs year-round, and to assist in the operation of the Artesia center. This position requires a flexible schedule.

  • Coordinate, promote, publish and implement recreational activities in specialty program area such as special events, senior citizens services, instructional classes, children’s programming, special needs programs, adult and youth sports
  • Organize & implement leagues, tournaments, aquatics, and daily programmed activities.
  • Interpret and explain game rules, and referee and umpire ball games
  • Monitor activities to ensure adherence to rules and safety procedures, or arrange for the removal of unruly patrons
  • Coach, lead and instruct program participants in the rules and proper participation in games and various recreational activities
  • Coordinate equipment/event set up and take down, as well as general open/close duties for programs and facility areas
  • Coordinate the keeping score or records for citywide youth sports program, as needed.
  • Collect, deposit and account for all fees, registrations and records pertaining to the recreation programs.  
  • Teach, conduct and plan the after-school program and special events
  • Serve as a chaperone at dances, excursions or special events
  • Issue, collect and properly maintain city equipment and supplies
  • Provide a safe, clean environment for facility users and visitors
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner, providing information about facilities, programs, entertainment options, and rules and regulations
  • Communicate with parents, coaches, volunteers, and participants regarding upcoming programs, equipment returns, and fee collection
  • Administer first aid according to prescribed procedures, and notify emergency medical personnel when necessary
  • May serve as Employee in Charge (EiC) in the absence of the supervisor

  • Employee will be required to work irregular hours including weekends, attend job-related meetings, and perform other duties as assigned.


  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class D or higher driver’s license issued by the State of New Mexico and have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must be able to pass a rigid background investigation.
  • One-year experience in recreation programs and recreation activities to include developing themes for purpose of tying and integrating recreation activities and special events preferred.
  • Must obtain CPR and 1st Aid Certification within 6 months of hire.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Experience working with children and youth.
  • Computer experience.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and operations methods used in recreation facilities. A variety of active and passive games and activities suitable for children, adolescents, adults, senior citizens and/or special populations. The tools and techniques of teaching music, drama, crafts, sports or other recreational/leisure time activities. The rules and regulations governing various competitive athletic games such as baseball, basketball, football, soccer and table games.


Physical Functions:

  • Must be able to lift up to an estimated 20 pounds from ground to waist level, or from ground to shoulder level, up to ten times total per day.
  • Must be able to stand and/or walk up to four hours at one time, and up to eight hours total per day.
  • Must be able to climb step ladder as needed to perform duties.
  • Must be able to crouch, kneel, and crawl as needed.
  • Must be able to bend at the waist and twist/rotate as needed on an almost constant basis, estimated at over 100 times total per day.
  • Must be able to work with arms extended or bent for up to four hours at one time, and up to eight hours total per day.
  • Must be able to push/pull with arms with an estimated force of ten pounds, up to five times total per day.
  • Must be able to use feet to manipulate foot controls on riding lawn mower.
  • Must be able to use hands and fingers to grasp/manipulate various equipment and supplies needed to perform essential job duties.
  • Must be able to coordinate use of hands and eyes to perform essential job duties.


Working Conditions:

  • Majority of work is performed both indoors and outdoors.
  • Indoor duties are performed in a temperature-controlled environment.
  • Indoor duties are performed on an even surface, which may be carpeted or tiled. 
  • Worker is required to use stepladder.
  • Work surface for indoor duties may be dry or wet.
  • Worker works alone primarily, with written instructions.
  • Worker sometimes works as part of a select team.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.   The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
