This position supports the accounting and financial functions for Heartland Housing.  Heartland Housing is a real estate development and management company in the affordable housing division of Heartland Alliance.  Experience in the real estate industry with Yardi or other real estate industry software is preferred.  A strong understanding of GAAP accounting principles with exposure to real estate accounting and reporting is also desirable for this position.

The Senior Financial Analyst's responsibilities include maintaining the general ledger and preparing the month end close procedures, assisting with financial planning and budgeting processes, analyzing financial statements and reports, developing financial models, preparing projections, and performing research and analysis as may be required by leadership. The Senior Financial Analyst will also be responsible for providing property management with financial guidance. Additionally, the Senior Financial is responsible for directing, reviewing, and coordinating the work of the Financial Analyst.

To be successful the Senior Financial Analyst should be able to perform a variety of financial activities including planning, analysis, budgeting, and reporting. This position requires strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills and the ability to present financial information and models in a concise and easily comprehensible manner. Utilizing hands-on accounting experience and in-depth understanding of accounting principles, the Senior Financial Analyst is expected to perform complex accounting activities and financial analysis. The Senior Financial Analyst must be able to work independently and collaboratively with different levels of employees.

Senior Financial Analyst Responsibilities:

  • Performs, monitors, and manages accounting duties related to the daily close, month-end close, year-end close (e.g., recording and review of transactions, balance sheet account reconciliations, preparation of accrual entries, variance analysis and preparation of associated workpapers.
  • Ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), company policies, and relevant financial and legal regulations.
  • Coordinate  budgeting process with Financial Analyst and Property Management. Oversee  budget development and provide review of budget submissions.
  • Review of new project proformas and documents.  Manage construction accounting and coordinate the transition from construction activities to an operating property under our management.
  • Help ensure compliance with tenant billing and reporting requirements.
  • Understanding key business drivers.
  • Develop and maintain working relationship with property and corporate staff.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with investors and lenders.
  • Develop a strong knowledge of both private and government funding sources for new properties.
  • Provide training for Financial Analyst(s).
  • Performing research and analysis as required.
  • Assisting with the year-end audit tasks and serve a lead role on annual audits.

Senior Financial Analyst Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related field.
  • CPA a plus.
  • 4+ years of experience in accounting or finance. Real estate  accounting experience is preferred.
  • Supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Ability to present financial information to a non-financial audience.
  • Working knowledge of financial strategies.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Detail-oriented and able to perform in a high-pressure environment.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite especially Excel and experience with accounting/finance software. Experience working with Yardi is preferred and with Financial Edge is desirable.  Strong ERP system experience is a requirement.
