Summary: As a member of the Martin’s Family, the Applications Development Manager supervises the staff within Martin’s MIS team that work in applications development and project management to help maintain current operational systems to be as effective and efficient as possible while evaluating and upgrading new software/applications as necessary.

The MIS department at Martin’s supports all departments including: Production, Transportation, Sales, Accounting/Finance, Purchasing, and HR.  It also supports our external wholesalers and distributors in the sales department.  This position manages the staff within Martin’s MIS team that work in applications development and project management to help maintain current operational systems to be as effective and efficient as possible while evaluating and upgrading new software/applications as necessary.  

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.  

  • Review project plans to plan and coordinate project activity.  

  • Develop and interpret organizational goals, policies and procedures.  

  • Develop applications and solutions, providing for data security and control, strategic computing and disaster recovery.  

  • Support and maintain third party applications.  

  • Consult with users, management, vendors and technicians to assess computing needs and system requirements.  

  • Maintain knowledge of new technology and industry standards.  

  • Meet with department heads, managers, supervisors, vendors and others to solicit cooperation and resolve problems.  

  • Provide users with technical support for computer problems as needed.  

  • Recruit, hire, train and supervise staff or participate in staffing decisions.  

  • Evaluate development project proposals to assess project feasibility and requirements.  

  • Control operational budget and expenditure.  

  • Review and approve all systems and programs prior to their implementation.  

  • Direct daily operations of department, analyzing workflow, establishing priorities, developing standards and setting deadlines.  

  • Experience with Scan Based Trading (SBT) and EDI.  

  • Assign and review the work of systems analysts, programmers and other computer related workers.  

  • Evaluate the organization’s technology use and needs and recommend improvements, such as hardware and software upgrades.  

  • Prepare and review operational reports or project progress reports.  

 

Supervisory  Responsibilities: Directly  supervises employees responsible for applications development and project management. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience:                                                             

  • High School Diploma or GED;  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field;  

  • Five to seven years’ managerial experience.  

 

Computer Skills:  

  • Proficient in Programming Languages.  

  • Experience with Enterprise systems including: HR, Inventory, Procurement, Asset Management, Logistics, Payroll, EDI.  

  • Experience with DSD preferred.  

 

Language Skills :  

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.  

 

Mathematical Skills :  

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.  

 

Reasoning Ability :  

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
