WW Lab Tech Pay:  $16.85

Schedule:

Days: Monday – Friday (subject to change)

Hours: 6:00 A.M. – 2:30 P.M. (subject to change)

Rotate on Call (weekends & possibly holidays)

Definition:  Responsible laboratory work requiring knowledge of wastewater laboratory tests needed to meet State/Federal Regulations. Primary work responsibility is collecting and analyzing sampling results, recording and reporting results. Work is performed in accordance with State/Federal laboratory standards by using standard methods for the examination of water and wastewater.

Tasks:

 

§  Conduct a variety of laboratory tests to monitor and identify kinds and amounts of solids in the influent and effluent at various stages of treatment including final discharge.

§  Tests will include total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, most probable numbers, fecal coliforms, chlorine residual, mixed liquid suspended solids, P.H., dissolved oxygen and dissolved solids and all other tests as required.

§  Will be required to do analysis on composted sludge.

  • Logs test results and flow volumes to facilitate preparing various State and Federal reports.
  • Operation of plant as necessary.
  • Perform maintenance on motors, pumps, control systems, valves, lines and other wastewater equipment.
  • Monitor and regulate the rate of flow throughout the plant.
  • Read and record a variety of meters and flow charts, keep log sheets and maintenance records.
  • Assist in minor repairs of different pieces of equipment.
  • Operate bar screens, grit chambers, and other related equipment at the headworks of the plant.
  • Take scheduled laboratory samples through the plant and may be required to do simple lab tests.
  • Help in cleaning and general maintenance of plant facilities.
  • Operate light equipment.

▪        May be required to wear self-contained breathing apparatus.

▪        May be required to drive city vehicle.

  • Will be required to work weekends.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills and Other Characteristics:

 

  • Knowledge of the general principles and practices of a wastewater treatment plant.

§  Knowledge of State and Federal regulations, standards and criteria regarding the discharge of plant effluent.

§  Knowledge of standard laboratory tests conducted to monitor and identify kind and amounts of solids in treated effluent.

§  Knowledge of State and Federal record keeping and reporting requirements for wastewater treatment plants.

  • Ability to follow complex written instructions, procedures and guidelines used in the wastewater field.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and handling of hazardous chemicals.
  • Knowledge in ordering reagents and other chemicals used in a wastewater laboratory.
  • Some knowledge in the use of a computer.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Two years laboratory experience.
  • Laboratory experience in a wastewater treatment plant preferred.
  • Education and/or experience in Chemistry required. Microbiology education and/or experience preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and perform all tasks required in the laboratory. 
  • High school diploma/GED. 
  • Valid New Mexico driver’s license
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Certification as a NM Wastewater Operator preferred

 

Physical Functions:

 

Standing for extended periods of time. Some bending.

Ability to lift 50 pounds.

 

Working Conditions:

 

Primarily in a laboratory setting with some outdoor field work.

 

Equipment, Tools, and Materials:

 

Operates a variety of equipment associated with wastewater laboratory and equipment that may be used in the field for sampling purposes. Computer: both mainframe and PC.
