Definition: Under general to limited supervision, supervises fire suppression and emergency medical services staff on an assigned shift, in conjunction with or during the absence of the Battalion Chief.

Tasks:
§ Coordinates/directs fire suppression, ambulance and rescue activities during assigned shift, including determining type of equipment and number of employees needed for initial response to an alarm.
Monitors cleaning and maintenance activities during assigned shift, including ensuring that tools and equipment are inventoried, maintained and replaced.
Checks/inspects fire station and equipment on a periodic basis to ensure that all tools, equipment and related facilities and materials needed for fire suppression and ambulance calls are clean, properly stored and fully functional at all times.
Conducts shift training, including training new recruits and members of the Volunteer Department, maintains shift training records, completes and files reports.
Responds to fire, ambulance and rescue calls as appropriate to ensure that services are being provided safely, efficiently, effectively and in a timely manner.
In the absence of a ranking officer, directs fire suppression efforts at the fire scene to facilitate the efficient, effective and safe deployment of staff and equipment and ensure that the fire scene is controlled as quickly and effectively as possible.
Performs the duties of Battalion Chief including personnel management and overseeing department operations in the absence of a ranking officer.
Performs a variety of fire suppression, ambulance and rescue tasks.
§ Employees may be called out in emergency and non-emergency situations. When contacted, the employee is expected to report to work unless there are special non-recurring circumstances. Outside employment or the operation of a business is not considered a special circumstance.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills and Other Characteristics:
§ Knowledge of fire suppression principles, methods, techniques and practices.
§ Knowledge of the street names and locations in the City of Artesia.
Knowledge of equipment requirements for effective fire suppression.
Knowledge of fire prevention and safety standards, methods, practices and procedures, including Fire Inspection and Fire Prevention Safety Codes.
Knowledge of fire investigation principles, methods, techniques and procedures.
Knowledge of basic principles of employee training and supervision.
Knowledge of emergency medical services practices and techniques.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, City officials and the public.
Ability to understand and interpret complex standards, regulations and guidelines.
Ability to respond to calls at any time and under any weather or hazardous conditions.
§ Ability to maintain, adjust and do minor repairs as necessary to keep fire apparatus and ambulances in good operating condition.
Skill in safely and effectively driving and operating a full range of fire suppression/emergency response vehicles, apparatus, and equipment
Ability to do maintenance and minor repairs to apparatus, equipment, building and grounds.
Ability to lift and move objects weighing more than 75 pounds.
Skill in directing fire suppression or ambulance activities at a scene.
Skill in operating a variety of fire suppression, ambulance and rescue equipment.
Skill in planning and training the shift and volunteer department.
Qualifications:
§ Must be able to respond to emergency and non-emergency situations. When contacted, the employee must be able to report to work unless there are special non-recurring circumstances. Outside employment or the operation of a business is not considered a special circumstance.
§ In-depth knowledge and experience in firefighting, fire prevention, emergency medical services, fire protection-training program(s) and/or fire administration, including departmental supervisory experience.
§ Must successfully complete the following job-related courses (as described in appropriate NFPA standard) within 12 months of effective promotion date. Failure to comply will result in either demotion or termination. Extenuating circumstances may be granted an extension upon approval of the Fire Chief.

§ High school graduate or GED
§ Must have a minimum 4 years cumulative career fire service experience.
§ Demonstrated computer experience in MS Word, MS Excel and Image Trend.
§ Employee is subject to call back and therefore required to have a telephone in his/her residence at all times.
