Equipment Operator I – Streets
Hourly Pay: $15.00
Schedule:
Days: Monday - Friday
Hours: 7:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M.
Definition: Under general supervision, operates small and medium size maintenance and automotive equipment in a variety of maintenance activities and performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks.

Tasks:
Perform minor repairs on equipment and reports the need for major repairs, checks and maintains fluid levels, greases and lubricates moving parts as required and handles and transports fuel for equipment.
Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled street maintenance tasks including: repairing city streets, alleys, potholes and sidewalks.
Patch potholes with cold mix and/or hot mix
Clean up streets, alley maintenance.
Trim trees and mulch.
Painting by hand or machine stripes, symbols, lines, crosswalks, etc.
Chip seal roadways.
Hot mix construction of roadways.
Installation and maintenance of street signs and streetlights
Maintenance of traffic signals (changing bulbs and fuses).
Traffic control (barricades, flagging, etc.)
Clean up after storms.
Snow removal and salting.
Operate Street Sweeper as needed.
Spray streets, medians and sidewalks for weeds as needed.
- Cleans and cares for tools and equipment.
- May periodically operate heavy maintenance and/or construction equipment.
Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled manual labor activities necessary to complete assigned projects.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of relevant traffic laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of occupational hazard and safety precautions.
- Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, and materials used in street repair, maintenance and construction.
- Ability to operate small to medium equipment.
- Ability to receive and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Skill in the safe operation and use of assigned equipment and tools.
- Ability to work alone.
- Ability to work with other departments.
- Knowledge of OSHA and other applicable laws.
- Ability to handle chemicals and pesticides safely.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Experience equivalent to one (1) year of maintenance, construction and/or landscaping work involving the operation of small and medium size equipment.
- Must obtain a valid New Mexico Commercial Class B operator’s license or higher as soon as possible but no later than six months from date of hire.
- Current New Mexico Commercial Class B operator’s license or higher preferred.
- Must maintain New Mexico Commercial Class B operator’s license or higher.
Physical Functions:
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally (i.e. up to one third of work day), from ground to waist level
Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. Frequently to constantly (i.e., from one-third up to entire work day), from ground to shoulder level.
- Ability to sit up to four hours at one time, and up to eight hours total per day.
- Ability to stand and/or walk for up to four hours at one time, and up to eight hours total per day.
- Ability to climb in and out of equipment cabs when needed to assist crew in performance of duties.
- Must be able to crouch, kneel, and remain in a prone position for up to 30 minutes at one time.
- Must be able to bend at the waist, and twist/rotate as necessary, in excess of 50 times total per day.
- Must be able to work with arms bent or extended for up to four hours at one time, and up to eight hours total per day.
- Must be able to push/pull with arms, with a force up to five pounds for up to four hours at one time, and up to eight hours total per day.
- Must be able to maintain balance while climbing in and out of equipment cabs, and while lifting and/or carrying heavy objects.
- Must be able to push with legs with up to 40 pounds of force, to operate foot controls of heavy equipment for up to four hours at one time, and up to eight hours total per day. Must be able to twist/rotate legs and feet at times in order to operate foot controls
- Must be able to use hands and fingers to grasp/manipulate levers and steering wheel in a bilaterally coordinated manner. Must also be able to use hands and fingers to grasp/manipulate writing utensils and other materials used in the performance of administrative duties.
- Must be able to coordinate use of hands and eyes in operation of equipment, as needed.
- Must be able to coordinate use of hands and eyes in operation of vehicle and various office equipment.
Working Conditions:
- Essential duties are performed both indoors and outdoors.
- Indoor duties may or may not be conducted in a temperature-controlled environment. Worker is exposed to natural conditions while performing outdoor duties.
- Worker is exposed to intermittent noise and vibration factors.
- Worker is exposed to diesel fumes, as well as fumes from carbon, gasoline and acetylene gas. Worker is also exposed to dusty, dirty conditions, and some work is performed in areas with poor ventilation.
- Work may be performed on an even or uneven surface, which may be wet or dry. Work may be performed on inclines or hills, working surface may be flat and hard, dusty, grass, asphalt, or concrete. Surface may be slick or greasy.
- Worker may perform duties alone, both with or without directions. Worker may also perform duties as part of a select team.
- Work hazards, or potential work hazards, include working around hot engines, using air guns, using a sledge hammer, working with and lifting large equipment and parts, performing work on a surface which may be slick, working with various solvents, performing welding procedures, and being exposed to possible severe weather conditions.
