Apprentice Mechanic I Hourly Pay: $20.07

Days: Monday - Friday
Hours: 7:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M.
Definition: Under general supervision changes and repairs a variety of tires. Performs and assists in mechanical repairs and janitorial services. Receives, stores, and issues a wide variety of equipment, materials, and supplies.

Tasks:
- Changes and repairs a variety of tires on equipment, trucks and automotive type vehicles.
- Performs related tasks in shop and in field.
- Preventive maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.
- Assists shop mechanics or other departments on request of shop supervisor.
- Operates tire balancer and other tire repair equipment.
- Maintains work orders on repairs.
- Performs some welding and painting.
- Cleans shop, warehouse and area around warehouse.
- Performs some building maintenance on warehouse.
- Cleans and cares for tools and equipment.
- Maintains a supply of spares for vehicles and equipment.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- May be called out after hours for emergency repairs.
- Fills requests for equipment, materials, and supplies in stock by reviewing requisition form, locating/retrieving requested items in warehouse, and completing record keeping required when items are issued.
- Stores equipment, materials, and supplies received, following established procedures and practices, using a variety of equipment, including a forklift and pallet jacks.
- Notifies Supervisor of low inventory levels and/or special inventory needs.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of tire repair on a variety of rims and types of tires.
- Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance and repairs.
- Knowledge in janitorial work and building maintenance.
- Knowledge of safety precautions and hazards in tire repair and mechanical work.
- Ability to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
- Ability to lift objects weighing over 50 pounds.
- Skill in the use of power and hand tools.
- Skill in the use of air operated tire machine and other tire repair tools.
- Skill in the use of computer and bubble balancer.
- Knowledge of general warehousing principles and practices, including inventory control and receiving/storage procedures.
- Knowledge of procedures and practices for issuing equipment, materials, and supplies to City staff.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, procedures, and guidelines.
- Skill in operating a variety of warehousing equipment, including a forklift and pallet jacks.
Qualifications:
- Six months experience in tire installation and repair.
- Six Months experience in basic vehicle maintenance work.
- Must possess a valid New Mexico operator’s license at time of hire.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Must be certified on forklift operation within three months of hire.
Physical Functions:
- With assistance of bar, must be able to lift tires for heavy equipment to an upright position. Such tires are estimated to weigh 180 pounds.
- Must be able to lift up to approximately 80 pounds from ground to waist level, as needed.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds from ground to waist level, up to an estimated 15 times per day.
- Must be able to stand/walk for up to four hours at one time, and up to eight hours total per day.
- Must be able to climb onto and off of, and crawl about heavy equipment, as needed.
- Must be able to remain in a prone position for long periods of time while working on vehicles once every two to three weeks.
- Must be able to crouch and kneel for up to four hours at one time, and up to eight hours total per day.
- Must be able to bend at the waist, and twist/rotate as necessary, in excess of 100 times total per day.
- Must be able to work with arms bent or extended for up to four hours at one time, and up to eight hours total per day.
- Must be able to push/pull with arms, with a force in excess of 50 pounds, as needed.
- Must be able to use feet and legs in the operation of vehicles and equipment. Must be able to push vehicles and equipment with assistance of legs, as needed.
- Must be able to maintain balance while climbing in and out of equipment cabs, or in and out of other vehicles to be repaired.
- Must be able to use hands and fingers to grasp/manipulate equipment and materials needed to perform essential duties.
- Must be able to grasp/manipulate levers and steering wheel if equipment and vehicles to be repaired, in a bilaterally coordinated manner.
- Must be able to coordinate use of hands, eyes, and fingers in using hand tools and machines, and in the operation of equipment.
Working Conditions:
- Performs work both indoors and outdoors.
- Indoor duties may or may not be conducted in a temperature-controlled environment. Worker is exposed to natural conditions while performing outdoor duties.
- Worker is exposed to intermittent noise and vibration factors.
- Worker is exposed to diesel fumes, as well as fumes from carbon, gasoline and acetylene gas. Worker is also exposed to dusty, dirty conditions, and some work is performed in areas with poor ventilation.
- Work may be performed on an even or uneven surface, which may be wet or dry. Work may be performed on inclines or hills, working surface may be flat and hard, dusty, grass, asphalt, or concrete. Surface may be slick or greasy.
- Worker may perform duties alone, both with or without directions. Worker may also perform duties as part of a select team.
- Work hazards, or potential work hazards, include working around hot engines, using air guns, using a sledge hammer, working with and lifting large equipment and parts, performing work on a surface which may be slick, working with various solvents, performing welding procedures, and being exposed to possible severe weather conditions.
Equipment, Tools, and Materials:
- Worker may be required to use tire changer, balancing machine and other tire changing tools.
- Worker may be required to operate equipment such as a loader, grater, bulldozer or fire engine. Worker may also be required to operate industrial trucks or automobiles.
- To unload vehicles, worker may use forklift and pallet jack.
- To assist repair or inspection work, worker may be required to operate vehicle jacks and hoists, welding torch and other welding equipment, cherry picker, transmission jacks and hoists, and a dolly.
- Tools used to assist in performance of essential duties include wrenches, a wide variety of hand tools, air guns, sledgehammer, pry bars, cheater pipes and bars, and chains.
- Materials or products used to assist in the performance of duties include lubricating sprays, solvents, and rags or towels to maintain cleanliness of working surface.
- Needs basic tools.
