Bridgespan’s Development Department focuses on the following activities:

  1. Developing and overseeing implementation of the strategy, messaging, and processes needed to maximize fundraising revenue
  2. Maintaining and expanding Bridgespan’s base of donor support through the institutionalization of ongoing cultivation and stewardship best practices.
  3. Engaging and coaching a select group of senior leaders in their donor solicitation processes, in an effort to build a robust internal capacity.

The Development Manager will play a critical role in increasing donor support and stewardship and reshaping the operations practices of the Development Department. This role reports to the Director of Development Operations and will work closely and collaboratively with the Development Manager of Asia & Africa, the Chief Operating Officer, Head of US Region, Head of the Bridgespan Institute and External Engagement, and the broader organization. 

Funder Identification/Cultivation

  • Research prospective donors for individual fundraising campaigns, sharing findings and recommendations with Director of Development Operations and campaign/theme leads.
  • Assist in development of donor cultivation strategy for individual fundraising campaigns/themes, with a particular focus on closing the Bridgespan Institute’s annual fundraising goals.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Development Operations, draft fundraising proposals for Institute themes.
  • Support fundraising efforts of partners working on various themes/campaigns including prospect research. 

Funder Solicitation/Stewardship 

  • Manage the grant/gift proposal and reporting process by creating project timelines, determining reporting requirements, coordinating with various departments for inputs (including the Grants and Finance Manager on budget questions), drafting content, sending out draft and deadline reminders, proofreading final reports, uploading materials to Fluxx/grant portals, and compiling all materials for submission.
  • Assist the Grants and Contracts Manager in preparation of gift acknowledgement letters, gift agreements, and gift receipts (tax receipt). 
  • Record donations received in stewardship calendar, and work cross-functionally on execution (e.g., communicate with Finance about receipt of payment).
  • Collaborate with development team members to develop engagement and stewardship opportunities for donors. 
  • Work with Director of Development Operations to manage fundraising projection and planned spending to ensure fundraising goals are met. 

Capacity Building / General Administration

  • Oversee, manage, and update all tracking systems: prospect records/cultivation tracker, donor records/stewardship tracker, reporting deadlines for each grant, online donor submission accounts (e.g. Fluxx) and pipeline of activities. 
  • Manage implementation of CRM for development purposes.
  • Maintain and update shared drive; ensure that all donor and foundation communication is saved and recorded. 
  • Run fundraising reports for management team, fundraising team, Board, (and others) that describe progress and effectiveness of fundraising campaigns (including Institute/theme dashboards)
  • Serve as project manager for the Development department, monitoring ongoing projects and tasks and sending reminders to the Director of Development Operations as needed.
  • Assess infrastructure and resources needed to support the Development Department and build out process and materials where needed (RAPID, Development orientation deck, etc.).
  • Work with Director of Development Operations and Development Manager of Asia & Africa to help set priorities for department.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, grant writing, and grants management
  • Proven track record of securing and managing grants from foundations and individual donors
  • Strong understanding of grant funding cycles, compliance, and reporting requirements
  • Experience managing grant budgets and ensuring funder compliance
  • Ability to work with various internal stakeholders with a collaborative mindset
  • Strong researching and prospecting abilities
  • Exceptional ability to manage multiple grants, deadlines, and reporting requirements
  • Experience using donor management and grant tracking systems (e.g. Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce, Foundation Directory Online)
  • Excellent grant writing and proposal development skills
  • Ability to translate complex ideas into compelling narratives for funders
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for internal and external stakeholders
  • Analytical skills to evaluate grant performance and identify areas for improvement
  • Ability to identify new funding opportunities and align them with Bridgespan’s priorities
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize data for impact reporting
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and CRM/grants management platforms
