Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nation’s largest and most effective dropout prevention organization. For over 40 years, Communities In Schools has been helping students achieve in school, graduate, and go on to bright futures. The CIS Male Student Achievement Program (MSAP) is a transformative leadership and peer support program for young men who are at high risk of dropping out of high school. MSAP identifies male-identifying students who have poor attendance, are at risk or are already involved with the juvenile justice system and are on the path to dropping out and cultivates a “positive brotherhood” to empower students with the support and skills to reduce or stop risky behaviors and make positive, informed choices about their relationships, physical health, and future.
MSAP offers curriculum-based, experiential group activities grounded in the leading adolescent development research. The pillars of the MSAP are critical mentoring, leadership development, developing a positive view of male masculinity, academic coaching, and post-secondary access. The program works by developing a close relationship with a skilled caring adult, creating a community of accountability among the young men, expanding horizons through enrichment experiences and exposure to college and career opportunities in Central Texas, and creating leadership opportunities and a chance for students to give back to the community.
