The Energy Supply Department’s Operating Engineer Group is seeking to enhance the section's existing engineering expertise with a dedicated electrical engineer who possesses experience in all aspects of power generation, electrical systems, controls, design, installation, and maintenance.  

Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking a Project Engineer to support our operating facilities. The Electrical Engineer position is an engineering opportunity that will enable you to utilize your engineering education and skills to become a valuable member of the operating engineering team supporting all four utilities. You will manage routine engineering projects and provide technical support to senior-level engineers.

Key Areas of Focus:

  • Prepare electrical engineering drawings, single lines, calculations, studies, and schematics
  • Coordinate and perform inspections, tests, and participate in on-site audits of equipment
  • Perform engineering design and project management for engineering projects, which includes developing budgets, estimating project costs, tracking changes, and monitoring schedules
  • Facilitate meetings and work with customers and stakeholders
  • Perform analysis and review of generator units and electrical equipment conditions, technical drawings, cost, specifications, and feasibility
  • Create and maintain computer models to aid in the analysis, design, and operation of systems
  • Follow NERC/WECC standards and develop new procedures and programs based on new regulations
  • Develop, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, processes, guidelines, and standards concerning engineering best practices and techniques
  • Conduct studies and research assignments    
  • Prepare, maintain, and submit reports; perform technical review of engineering reports and documents from outside consultants
  • Perform short- and long-term planning on future projects
  • Train and support junior engineers and plant personnel, and serve as an electrical safety resource

Who You Are… A candidate who possesses theoretical knowledge of electrical systems, including power generation, power distribution, relay protection, and electrical systems, along with general engineering theories, techniques, and procedures. Additionally, an understanding of control systems, utility operating policies, procedures, and processes, and strong project management principles and practices will be needed. Finally, strong computer skills, including electronic/online tools, and AutoCAD drafting will be needed as you develop in this position.

Education and Experience: 

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university is required 
  • Electrical Engineering emphasis and Power Engineering coursework preferred
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is highly valued
  • The ideal candidate will most likely have five to seven years of engineering experience beyond academic training
  • This position will be primarily responsible for Utilities operating facilities, including fossil fuel plants, hydroelectric plants, battery energy storage systems, combined cycle, water treatment, and wastewater treatment

What Does this Opportunity Offer… In this position, you will have the opportunity to apply engineering principles while being responsible for the design and construction of operating facilities, maintenance, and capital improvement projects. You will become the subject matter expert for compliance with NERC generation-related standards for the Colorado Springs Utilities generation fleet. As well, you will work alongside other engineers, operators, and maintenance staff as you develop in your career. Additionally, this position will expose you to engineering as it is related to maintenance and troubleshooting activities performed by the electricians, and design and implement electrical systems for capital improvement projects.
