Equipment Operator I Hourly Pay:  $15.90

Schedule:

Days: Monday - Saturday

Hours: 7:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M.

Definition:  Under general supervision performs a variety of unskilled work associated with the operation, maintenance and repair of the Transfer Station and its equipment.

Essential Functions:

 Tasks:

  • Operates scales.
  • Estimates volume.
  • Instructs public on how to separate trash.
  • Operates chipper and scissors lift.
  • Cleans building and yards.
  • Assist other employees.
  • Answers customer inquiries/complaints in a professional and courteous manner.
  •       Pick up discarded tree limbs, water heaters, stoves, mattresses, furniture (household goods), boxes, construction debris, carpets, pallets, limited to 90 pounds.
  •       Repair and paint dumpsters.
  •       Screen material for hazardous wastes.
  • Ensures the safety of residential and commercial drivers while dumping solid waste material.
  • Ensures the drivers are dumping material in assigned locations in order to stay in compliance with the environmental regulations.
  • When parking a vehicle the employee shall place the customer’s vehicle in the bays in a safe manner allowing enough working room between the customer’s vehicle and the trailer and other equipment.
  • Employee shall know what materials that are acceptable or unacceptable and will advise customers when needed and inform them where they may dispose of properly.
  • Employee will maintain all rules posted and set by the City or State.
  • Employees must complete proper forms and sign off as required by State Solid Waste regulations.
  • Employee will keep work area clear and clean of any debris. At the end of the shift or day they shall clean work area before leaving for the day. Roads leading to and from the transfer station including adjoining properties, or any area affected by dumped or blowing trash coming to the transfer station will be cleaned and maintained on a daily basis.
  • May measure loads and calculate cost for loads of material to be dumped.
  • Ensures that improper or unregulated material is not to be disposed of.
  • Utilizes the 2-way radio to communicate with other staff members.
  • Cooperates with other staff members to enhance a professional team.
  • Complete all duties as assigned.
  • Employee must perform all duties with minimal supervision.
  • Employee may be required to work irregular hours including weekends, attend job-related meetings, and perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills and Other Characteristics:

  • Ability to use hand tools and operate equipment safely.
  • Prolonged exposure to fluctuating environmental conditions.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

 Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Current New Mexico driver’s license.
  • Lift fifty (50) pounds.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills and Other Characteristics:

  • Ability to use hand tools and operate equipment safely.
  • Prolonged exposure to fluctuating environmental conditions.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate hydraulic lifting/compaction equipment.
  • Knowledge of relevant traffic laws and regulations
  • Ability to receive and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of names and location of streets in the City of Artesia.
  • Ability to maintain records.
  • Ability to life bulky items.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Current New Mexico driver’s license
  • Lift ninety (90) pounds.
  • Hazardous Waste Identification.
  • Ability to obtain Transfer Station Operators license within 1 yr. of hire

Physical Functions: 

  • Must be able to stand/walk for up to four hours at one time, and up to eight hours total per work day.
  • Must be able to go up and down inclines of even and uneven terrain.
  • Must be able to bend at waist and twist/rotate as necessary up to 50% of the work day.
  •       Must be able to work with arms extended up to one third of the work day.
  • Must be able to work with arms bent up to two-thirds of the work day.
  • Must be able to balance on legs up to 4 ours at one time and up to eight hours total per work day.
  • Must be able to use feet to operate foot controls of City vehicles.

 Working Conditions:

  • Both indoors and outdoors dealing with waste material.
  • Odors, dust, wind, rain etc.
  • Heat, cold, unpleasant odors 
  • Worker is exposed to noise and vibration factors.
  • Worker is exposed to exhaust fumes, dust, and mists.
  • Surface may be wet or dry, on hard surfaces or dirt roads.  Grease or oil may be found on working surfaces.
  • Work hazards include and exposure of skin to gasses and fumes
