BASF/Chemetall, is the Surface Treatment global business unit of BASF’s Coatings division, operating under the Chemetall brand, and a leading supplier of applied surface treatments worldwide. At BASF/Chemetall, we develop and manufacture tailor-made technology and system solutions for applied surface technology. Our products protect metals from corrosion, facilitate forming and treatment, prepare parts optimally for the painting process and ensure excellent coating adhesion. The chemical treatment of metal surfaces is BASF/Chemetall core competence. The focus of our worldwide activities is on the development and implementation of customized technology and system solutions for surface treatment.

Where the Chemistry Happens:

Under the Supervision of the Team Leader, performs routine testing and reports results. Processes project requests from customers and the field sales force. Recommends appropriate products for customers’ operations. Provides technical consultation/advice to the Field Sales force.

Formula for Success:

  • Technical Support/Technical Service
    • Run laboratory evaluation of Customers’ Tech Service Jobs
    • Select and recommend appropriate products for customers’ applications
    • Develop optimum operating parameters for Chemetall/BASF products
    • Provide technical advice to the sales force, field engineers and customers
    • Provide troubleshooting assistance in the field (in customers’ plant)
    • Provide technical information for Profiles, Process Instructions and other technical literature when necessary

  • Communication
    • Writes reports on lab results and field visits
    • Informs supervisor on project status
    • Assist in telephone support for sales/customers as required
    • Maintains Technical Service Worksheet for each project

  • Professional Development
    • Continue formal education
    • Continuously upgrade technical skills by working in the laboratories and consulting with other technical personnel, staying abreast of technical developments in the field, reading technical journals and learning new methods of analysis
    • Work with Chemetall/BASF’s Equipment Engineering group as required to better understand dispensing and control equipment
    • Work in the field with Chemetall/BASF TSRs at customers to deepen and broaden knowledge of the products and applications
    • Attend industry seminars and in-house seminars to keep current with new technologies
    • Polish written and verbal communication skills
    • Improve computer skills

  • Laboratory Support
    • Insure work area is maintained in a safe manner
    • Operate in the lab environment according to Health and Safety Policies
    • Maintain laboratory equipment in peak operating condition in accordance with Chemetall/BASF quality system
    • Check inventory level sufficiency of supplies

Physical Requirements:

  • Includes sitting, walking, standing, alternate sit/stand and viewing monitor, simple grasping frequently, power grasping, and fine manipulation with hands, pushing and pulling with hands, reaching above shoulder level, and lifting and carrying up to 20lbs., and occasional lifting and carrying of up to 50 lbs.

Work Environment includes exposure to or working with Chemicals/Solvents frequently daily including a computer keyboard, monitor and mouse; moderate noise; moderate temperature. Position requires continuous ability to make decisions. Required to wear goggles. (Frequency Definitions: Occasional = Up to 33%; Frequent = Over 34%; Continuously = up to 100%)

Ingredients for Success

  • BS Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in a related physical science is acceptable
  • 2+ years prior experience is required
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Excellent problem solving abilities and interpersonal skills
