The Applications Testing Engineer is responsible for operation, maintenance, quality, and upkeep of the ACE lab including but not limited to ACE and deactivation units and all GC’s. The position is responsible for delivering timely ACE data in support of NPI projects, Manufacturing Support, and Customer Service requests.  The position supervises a technical team supporting lab activities and works with Emission lab supervisor/team as required. The position will also lead NPI projects as agreed with R&D Manager and help to drive a continuous improvement (CI) strategy for the lab.  


Key Responsibilities

•    Maintains full compliance with all aspects of JM EHS policies
•    Responsible for all aspects of ACE lab operation, maintenance, and scheduling
•    Ensures that all ACE units are functional and available, and that high quality and reliable data is generated with high productivity standards and a reasonable turn-around time
•    Provides first line supervision for ACE labs personnel
•    Leads the development of testing and deactivation methods to properly discriminate catalyst performance
•    Ensures excellent quality of results as demonstrated through established control programs and consistent ability to meet mass balance closure standards
•    Supervision and development of a scientific team that carries out the daily laboratory activities
•    Works with vendors or internal collaborators to drive a CI strategy for the ACE lab according to a documented plan
•    Drive EHS improvements and Good Housekeeping in the lab and elsewhere, leading by example
•    Participates in technical and safety reviews (e.g. HAZOP), JSA for projects, and drives safety as a priority
•    Produces reports and presentations on catalyst testing and characterization results
•    Delivers Customer Service support where ACE testing is required, including summarizing results and main findings
•    Interacts with TS/Sales teams as needed
•    Develops in-house expertise in catalysts and additives characterization and applications
•    Assists in exploratory efforts aimed at broader fluidization testing applications beyond additives
•    Develops bench scale characterization in the lab as well as in the pilot facilities  
•    Develops analytical techniques such as robust Sulfur analysis, gasoline octane modeling, and develops deactivation protocols
•    Acts as a resource to others in areas of materials synthesis and characterization methods and techniques
•    Deliver NPI project(s) as assigned 
•    Keeps abreast of literature and patents related to catalyst formulation/materials science and characterization and testing techniques
•    Interacts with (internal) customers to understand experimental objectives to translate into functional tests
•    May be asked to develop presentations or contribute to publications to support the Additive’s Business
•    Performs other duties as requested by R&D Manager


Are you the ideal candidate?

•    Higher degree/PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry or advanced engineering, or demonstrable applicable experience 
•    5+ years’ experience in a chemical manufacturing or R&D environment with strong ties to business and manufacturing support projects
•    2+ years of lab supervision experience preferred
•    Understanding manufacturing process, process controls, and process measurement systems
•    Catalyst testing and performance evaluation experience 
•    Advanced experience with GC analysis methods and techniques
•    Hands on approach, excellent interpersonal skills and ability to coach others desirable
•    Working knowledge of structural, mechanical, electrical, process, instrumentation and controls devices, equipment and systems desirable
•    Knowledge of laboratory management systems, relevant codes and standards
•    Practical experience with pilot plant equipment, especially pilot scale dryers, ovens, mills and raw materials handling
•    Experience in general catalysis desirable
•    Experience in managing highly skilled scientific people desirable
•    Experience in pilot scale-up and scale down of catalysts desirable
•    Experience working in the refineries sector desirable
