Design and execute environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs in support of Johnson Matthey’s (JM) Devens and North Andover, MA facilities. Provide the technical expertise and support necessary to monitor and continuously improve on-going compliance of assigned EHS programs, regularly conduct industrial hygiene exposure assessments and sampling, become trained and participate in the site emergency response team (ERT), conduct in-person and hands-on EHS training, and engage front-line employees and supervisors on a daily basis to promote a positive safety culture. This is a generalist role and will be intended to support multiple EHS disciplines including industrial hygiene (50%), Environmental (25%), and Safety (25%).   

 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Oversee the industrial hygiene exposure management program for Devens and North Andover under the direction of a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), to include on-going update of the site’s exposure assessment summary, conducting new chemical reviews and qualitative exposure assessments to anticipated potential employee exposures, perform exposure monitoring and sampling to quantitatively evaluate employee exposures, lead exposure control efforts to minimize exposures by applying the hierarchy of controls, periodically re-evaluate similar exposure groups, maintain industrial hygiene documentation, and submit Group EHS annual summaries.  
  • Maintain and improve assigned environmental programs at the Devens and North Andover, MA facilities. Programs will be assigned with consideration of the employee’s technical knowledge and interests, and the needs of the EHS Department. Assigned environmental programs may include: ISO 14001 support, air emissions monitoring and permitting, hazardous waste, stormwater, spill prevention, control, and countermeasure (SPCC), wastewater, radiation protection, state and local permitting, refrigerant management, and Tier II, TRI, Toxic Use Reduction Act (TURA) reporting.  
  • Maintain and improve assigned safety programs at the Devens and North Andover, MA sites. Programs will be assigned with consideration of the employee’s technical knowledge and interests, and the needs of the EHS Department. Assigned safety programs may include: Integrated Contingency Plan, lockout tagout, powered industrial trucks, confined spaces, fall protection, hazard communication, personal protective equipment, respiratory protection, permit to work, contractor safety, and behaviour-based safety.  
  • Establish an internal safety and health auditing program to regularly inspect plant operations, research and kilo laboratories, and facilities and maintenance in partnership with department level supervisors. 
  • Lead investigations of EH&S incidents and non-compliance matters, mentor front-line supervisors in the performance of root cause analysis, and track completion of corrective action plans.  
  • Deliver site EH&S training to ensure all personnel receive the necessary and required EH&S training. 
  • Oversee Enablon EHS incident management system, including administration, tracking, and training. 
  • Carry out any other duties which are within the employee’s skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.  

 

Are you the ideal candidate? 

  • BS in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or related EH&S or scientific field. 
  • 1-3 years of experience in a pharmaceutical or chemical company. 
  • Familiar with federal, state of Massachusetts, and local EHS regulations. 
  • Experience implementing, improving, and sustaining EHS programs at a pharmaceutical or chemical company.
