Circa. £50-60K base salary + bonus + pension + benefits

Circa. £70-80K package

Johnson Matthey are actively seeking a Network Lead Engineer to be based in our Royston Office on a permanent basis. The role can also be based from our offices in London or Teesside.

Johnson Matthey IT (JMIT) is Johnson Matthey’s global IT function responsible for ensuring that our IT capabilities are not only able to support and integrate technologies but can also offer insight into future IT tools that could provide us with a competitive edge and improved operating efficiencies. We are currently in the process of a global IT transformation with several large programmes running and about to start.  


The Network Lead Engineer is an SME accountable for owning technical roadmap and strategy for embedding new tools and projects within the Networking area of Infrastructure & Engineering. Within this area they are responsible for ensuring that solutions are fit for purpose and for maximising the value derived from investments in technology, including driving Automation.

The Lead Engineer will collaborate closely with the Service Delivery teams in their respective area, allowing them to focus on supporting the business through BAU operations, while gathering feedback on how the current estate is working and what needs to be improved. The Lead Engineer is a conduit for new projects impacting the Networking area, ensuring that they bring improvements and do not unnecessarily impact live operations.

They will also engage closely with other areas of JMIT to ensure alignment and collaboration.

Key responsibilities:

  • Own and drive technical roadmap for all Networking technologies (including Campus LAN, Data Centre LAN, Cloud, WAN, Firewalls, Identity Service Engine, Stealthwatch, Load Balancing)
  • Responsible for embedding new tools and technologies
  • Oversight of projects impacting the Network area
  • Drive Automation and shift-left
  • Engage with stakeholders across JMIT to ensure ongoing alignment, particularly Architecture and Security
  • Allow Service Delivery team to focus on supporting business through as-is environments
  • Provide technical coaching to team members as the SME in the team.
  • Ensure that technical documentation is maintained and kept up to date in line with JM standards and policies.
  • Share acquired knowledge with colleagues through formal documentation and communications sessions.
  • To carry out any other duties which are within the employee’s skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.
  • Always ensure that company Policies, Standards and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are adhered to.
  • As a member of the global JMIT community, be a champion of the function’s values and culture, while demonstrating and openly encouraging the behaviours expected from a professional, best in-class IT team.

Are you the ideal candidate?  You will have:

  • Experience in Lead Engineer role in Networks for global organisation
  • Experience in global IT operations
  • Subject Matter Expert in campus LAN routing & Switching
  • Subject Matter Expert in Data Centre LAN (MSO & ACI)
  • Subject Matter Expert in network security technologies (Firewall, ISE, Stealthwatch)
  • Subject Matter Expert in WAN, Load Balancing and other network technologies
  • Experience defining business requirements and architecting solutions
  • Proven experience of maintaining, configuring and troubleshooting Network technologies
  • Relevant industry experience
  • Experience of Cloud computing solutions is desirable
  • Relevant Cisco qualifications (CCNP Enterprise, Security, Data Centre)
  • ITIL v3 is desirable
