Johnson Matthey is actively seeking two Solution Specialist (Quality) to be based in our Wayne, PA office on a permanent basis.

Johnson Matthey IT (JMIT) is Johnson Matthey’s global IT function responsible for ensuring that our IT capabilities are not only able to support and integrate technologies but can also offer insight into future IT tools that could provide us with a competitive edge and improved operating efficiencies.


The Solution Specialist will be part of the Manufacturing Operations Management Center of Excellence (MOM CoE) Continuous Improvement (CI) team, providing on going functional and development support for the MOM LIMS and QMS business solutions to ensure that current and future business requirements are met. The Solution Specialist will also provide in depth business process support to the business when providing these technical LIMS and QMS solutions.  As a Solution specialist you will be expected to be hands on and enhance and develop Strategic and legacy applications using development platforms.

Key responsibilities:

  • Reporting directly to the Solution Lead, the Solution Specialist will:
  • Work with business process owners / experts to enhance the value delivered to the business through continuous improvement of business processes, focused upon better use of MES application solutions and associated data / information.
  • Maintain, enhance and upgrade existing LIMS and QMS systems.
  • Contribute to the review and creation of technical software design, to facilitate the delivery of change requests.
  • Scope out, estimate and impact/risk assess complex Application Change Requests, to enable effective prioritisation / investment decisions.
  • Configure application functionality to meet agreed business requirements within area of specialism.
  • Draft user requirement specifications, functional specifications and technical design documentation necessary for solution configuration and/or bespoke developments, allowing changes to be delivered by JMIT and/or 3rd Party Software Engineering teams.
  • Plan, prepare and execute systems, integration and other staged testing, required to confirm readiness of developed changes for release to live production environments.
  • Support business process experts in execution of User Acceptance & Regression Testing, guiding and advising as necessary, whilst not taking away business accountability for completion.
  • Represent application changes through the JM-IT Change & Release governance processes, as required, maintaining the JM-IT Configuration Management Database (CMDB) as necessary.
  • As necessary, work as a member of application project teams, to provide continuity of JM solution, application landscape and data knowledge in order to strengthen the delivered solutions.
  • Works with Business Service owner(s) to maintain appropriate application role-based security profiles, in order to achieve the correct balance between process efficiency and adequate business controls necessary to manage business risk.
  • Oversee deployment of application package patches and upgrades, working with technical staff to apply changes as necessary.
  • Participate in continuous service improvement, knowledge management and other processes focused upon improving overall service performance, as required by the JM-IT Operations function.
  • Supports the business process experts / super-user community in knowledge transfer, skills and competency improvement activities.

Are you the ideal candidate?  You will have:

  • Relevant Developer qualifications (varies by specialism)
  • A degree (or equivalent experience) in computer science, engineering, or a chemistry related discipline
  • Experience of working with the following:
    • Deep knowledge in Labware LIMS, Experience in writing LIMS Basic Subroutines, LIMS Basic Calculations, Automation Scripts, Stored queries, etc. Good knowledge in all modules of Labware- LIMS Stability, Inventory, Storage Location Management
    • Experience with C# /VB.NET, SQL Server, ASP.NET, JSON, JQuery, SSRS, Barcode scanners, RFID
    • Experience with ELN, QDMS and other quality related systems a plus
    • Business analysis and process mapping skills   
    • Professional standards-based web development using ASP.Net, HTML/HTML5, CSS/CSS3, and JavaScript
  • .Net Developer
    • Experience of working with the following: ASP.NET, SQL Server, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and/or C#
  • Web Developer:
    • Hands on experience in designing and developing applications using Java EE platforms
    • Object oriented analysis and design using common design patterns.
    •  Deep insight of Java and JEE internals (Class loading, Memory Management, Transaction management etc)
    •  Excellent knowledge of Relational Databases, SQL and ORM technologies (JPA2, Hibernate)
    •  Experience in developing web applications using at least one popular web framework (JSF, Wicket, GWT, Spring MVC)
  • Be experienced with bespoke MOM applications
  • Knowledge of SDLC processes e.g. Agile (Scrum, Kanban), Waterfall
  • Experience with various development tools such as JIRA, Bitbucket
  • Significant exposure to either MES or Quality business processes used with Manufacturing Organizations
  • Excellent business analysis skills in a highly regulated industry e.g. chemical, manufacturing or pharmaceutical
  • Significant experience in requirement gathering, complex solution definition and driving medium to large change
  • Awareness of latest technologies/frameworks and experience leading others is desirable
  • Awareness of ITIL principles is desired
  • Experience handling multiple tasks, have excellent attention to detail, and be willing and able to learn new technologies quickly
