Our Catalyst Technologies business is recruiting for a Principal Researcher to take responsibility for the Ammonia Cracking research program to generate new products, processes and understanding of commercial value to Johnson Matthey.

Ammonia as energy carrier or fuel has a growing material presence in the new energy supply corridors for international transportation and storage of hydrogen and this role will support the continued development and growth Johnson Matthey is driving in this exciting area.

This role will have the responsibility to build understanding of the science involved in this duty through catalyst testing and evaluation of optimised catalysts, as well as providing technical insight to support our Commercial and Manufacturing teams.

Efficient Natural Resources is one of our Sectors, within Johnson Matthey plc with revenues of circa £1 billion (circa £7 billion including precious metal value acquired and traded) and operations worldwide. With the rise of both population figures and consumer expectations, thoughts are turning to how we can make more of the resources we have available.  Our Efficient Natural Resources sector helps customers to achieve greater efficiency and optimal yields in the use of these natural resources.  Through recycling capabilities, we help the world use resources efficiently and protect the environment.

The Catalyst Technologies business serves the oil, gas, commodity chemicals, petrochemicals, and fine chemicals industries. We pride ourselves on our technical expertise and the relationships we foster with our customers are built from the appreciation of the knowledge base we can bring to support their business.

Your responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the execution and delivery of Ammonia Cracking technical program:
  • Run and maintain the existing test facility and lead definition of new capex investment for enhanced capability.
  • Define, plan and execute experimental programs to determine key design data to support effective commercial offers . 
  • Evaluate new catalysts and technology offerings .
  • Proactively look to build deep technical expertise around Ammonia Cracking technology, and maintain awareness of relevant scientific advances.
  • Contribute towards idea generation and preservation of Intellectual Property within the technology area .
  • Act as the technical contact for scale up of new catalysts, working with Operations teams to achieve a rapid pace to market.
  • Work independently as the technical expert within generally defined project direction, identifying and mitigating risks in R&D experiments / projects. 

Requirements for the role:

  • Degree and/or postgraduate qualification in chemistry or a related discipline
  • Experience of running testing rigs and safety management
  • Experience of catalyst testing
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively to diverse audiences
  • Innovative thinker and natural problem solver with the ability to deliver practical solutions to problems
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise effectively
