Chicago Public Media is one of the largest, most decorated, aggressively creative, and journalistically ambitious public radio organizations in the nation. We are home to WBEZ, Chicago’s NPR news station, and Vocalo Radio, Chicago’s Urban Alternative, (91.1 FM in Chicago, vocalo.org everywhere), which serves a multicultural audience through an urban alternative music and culture format. The Opportunity: Digital Multimedia Producer, Vocalo

Vocalo Radio is Chicago’s Urban Alternative, an eclectic mix of Hip-Hop, alternative R&B, House music and culture.  We aspire to be catalyst for discovery, expression and participation, inspiring the next generation of Black and Latinx creatives and changemakers. Our format works at the intersection of music, storytelling and engagement to affect positive change in our community and in people’s lives.

We are seeking a Digital Multimedia Producer who will own our digital presence, grow our audience, and position Vocalo as an essential destination for music, arts, and culture.  They will create, produce and distribute compelling, original content across Vocalo’s digital platforms (web, app, social media) and to help us translate these experiences IRL.  The Digital Multimedia Producer will work closely with a small team of hosts, producers and freelance contributors to expand and deepen our engagement with diverse audiences and to help position Vocalo Radio as Chicago’s premiere destination for music and culture. 

Our ideal Digital Multimedia Producer is fluent in digital and social media platforms, working effortlessly to produce and publish stories, posts, pictures and videos to our website and our primary social media outlets (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube). You love the artists and music at the heart of our urban alternative format and are passionate about for growing and connecting young diverse audiences, particularly among Chicago’s Black and Latinx communities. You’re positive, upbeat and creative – and you know how to focus and deliver on deadline. Excellent writing and communication come naturally to you, as does telling stories that authentically engage diverse audiences. You thrive in a collaborative, creative environment and love working with a wide array of colleagues and artists to help build Vocalo Radio into a truly vibrant cultural force.
 

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and produce original music, arts and culture content for Vocalo’s digital platforms, including audio, web and social media. 
  • Manage Vocalo.org and Vocalo’s social media accounts, including taking lead responsibility for content production and posting, account management, and audience analytics.
  • Develop and maintain an editorial calendar for vocalo.org including regular interviews, profiles, and adaptations of audio content.
  • Write, edit and produce Vocalo’s bi-weekly newsletter, The Goods.
  • Create and edit photo and video content that centers on joyful amplification of our core audience and Chicago as a whole.
  • Contribute to the curation of new music selections and playlists, and optimize audio posts with compelling copy, images, and story editing.
  • Work with the on-air content team to produce and build out our This is What Chicago Sounds Like (#Chisoundslike) series, including selecting guests, creating photos, writing questions, and building digital versions of the story on Vocalo.Org          i
  • Steward Vocalo’s visual look and voice across digital platforms, including social media, to grow audience and deepen engagement. 
  • Manage Vocalo branding, determine usage for logos, consult with growth marketing team and leadership teams to ensure branding is uniform across all platforms and delivers the best impression of the brand at all times. 
  • Identify relevant content from WBEZ, freelancers and other content partners that further Vocalo’s mission and service.
  • Collaborate with CPM’s events and editorial teams to conceptualize, plan and support IRL and virtual events that deepen engagement with our audiences.

 Additional Duties

  • Using Google Analytics and other available data, monitor the performance of stories and analyze for future improvements.
  • Graphic design production for web and social media, including photo illustrations, type treatments and original artwork. 
  • Participate in cross-departmental product development work groups and content brainstorming sessions.
  • Project manage occasional projects and editorial collaborations.
  • Work occasional weekends and holidays.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, marketing, communications, web design, or related field
  • 1+ years of digital journalism experience in a deadline driven environment.
  • A demonstrated passion for, and understanding of, Vocalo’s mission, content and target audience, including BIPOC musicians, artists and creators who shape Chicago culture.
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills with strong news judgement.
  • Proficiency with Content Management System (CMS), including Wordpress, as well as Adobe Creative Suite and other multimedia software.
  • Passion for creating and optimizing content for different digital and social media platforms and experience growing and engaging digital audiences through tailored strategies.
  • Strong photography, photo editing, and/or video production abilities is a plus.
  • Ability to produce high quality work in a collaborative environment, working equally effectively with creative, marketing, and product development teams.
  • Well-organized and focused, working to quickly meet multiple deadlines.

Due to current COVID restrictions, you must be able to work remotely at your own designated location with Internet access and you must be willing and able to work at our Navy Pier offices, if needed. Right now, most of our staff is working remotely.
