About the Job

Chicago Public Media, home to WBEZ, Chicago's NPR news station, is looking for a Full Stack Software Engineer to join our burgeoning Software Engineering team.  Reporting to the Lead Software Engineer, our next Full Stack Software Engineer will collaborate with other Engineers, Product Managers, Producers, Editors, and Reporters.  They will develop and support a suite of complex and essential applications delivering vital news, information, and entertainment to the Chicagoland Area, and beyond.

About You

This role demands a unique combination of technical skills, flexibility, and on the job learning.  Our suite of applications includes Cross Platform Mobile Apps, Frontend Web Apps, Serverless Microservices, Java API's, and more.  Rather than expertise in a particular stack, the ideal candidate for this position will be familiar with a variety of backend and frontend technologies, with the ability to learn new languages on the job.

In addition to coding frontend and backend application logic, you will help support the underlying infrastructure of our suite of applications, participate in daily SCRUMS, regular technical collaboration meetings, and sprint planning meetings.

You will have a strong voice in essential technical and design decisions and will work closely with a cross functional team of thought leaders and content creators to create best-in-class digital news experiences for our audiences.

Technical Skills Required

  • Portfolio-proven experience in frontend and backend software engineering.
  • Experience in HTML5, CSS3, Vanilla JS, and at least 1 server side language.
  • Understanding of at least one JS Framework (React/Angular), will a willingness to adopt and learn new frameworks on the job.
  • Understanding of SASS and/or SCSS.
  • Experience using Node JS in conjunction with build tools such as Gulp and Webpack in command line.
  • Understanding of performance implications and speed optimization of frontend and backend software applications.

Additional Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills and a penchant for collaborative workflows.
  • An excitement for news and an interest in public media.
  • Due to current COVID restrictions, you must be able to work remotely at your own designated location with internet access and you must be willing and able to work at our Navy Pier offices, with proof of vaccination.  Right now, most of our staff is working remotely.

Not Required but Preferred

  • Familiarity with Cloud Computing services such as AWS.
  • Experience with frontend media streaming technology.
  • Experience with React Native is huge plus.
