The Opportunity

The Broadcast Maintenance Engineer is a technical position that provides maintenance for our studios, transmitter equipment and digital audio library system. The Broadcast Maintenance Engineer responds to support requests from our reporters and production staff regarding studio and recording equipment. In addition to responding to outages and failures with timely repairs, the position must also conduct preventative maintenance, work with outside vendors, tracks performance of equipment, documents equipment upgrades and replacement. The Broadcast Maintenance Engineer must be a “self-starter”, able to work independently and fulfill responsibilities without constant supervision, with a proven track record of excellent customer service and communication skills. The Broadcast Maintenance Engineer follows a preventative maintenance plan incorporating Chicago Public Media Systems Department Staff and outside vendors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain integrity of all on-air and on-line products, including high power FM + HD, digital audio & audio streaming.
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair all broadcast radio station equipment, including transmitters, antennas, STL, satellite downlinks, studio equipment, remote equipment, generators and backup power systems, telephone system and related equipment.  
  • Working knowledge of weekly review of EAS logs for correct and complete entries and tower light requirements.
  • Conduct equipment tests to ensure optimal product output and FCC compliance.
  • Create instructional materials and teach operators to use technical equipment and systems.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in broadcast engineering including experience with broadcast transmission system installations and broadcast studio equipment.
  • Availability to work various hours/days, including weekends.
  • Ability to provide 24x7 on-call, on-site service for studio and transmitter locations.
  • Ability to do component level troubleshooting.
  • Ability to inspect, repair, and maintain all broadcast radio station equipment, including transmitters, antenna’s, satellite downlinks, automation system, studio equipment, remote equipment, generators, telephone system and related other equipment.
  • Knowledge of computers and IT & Network systems.
  • Knowledge of FCC Rules and Regulations.
  • Strong PC skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio).
  • Strong verbal and writing communication skills; excellent customer service is critical.
  • Proven time management skills including the ability to multi-task in a multiple project environment.
  • SBE Certifications are a plus.

Due to current COVID restrictions, you must be able to work remotely at your own designated location with Internet access and you must be willing and able to work at our Navy Pier offices, if needed. Right now, most of our staff is working remotely.
