The Opportunity

The Engagement Editor is a key member of the Community Engagement Team, designing and executing an engagement journalism strategy that connects CPM to young and diverse communities in the Chicagoland region in meaningful and mutually beneficial ways. The Engagement Editor will work collaboratively to embed community engagement principles into CPM journalism and content, create pathways for robust public input and feedback, will champion and produce editorial content that elevates community voices and perspectives, and will build healthy feedback loops that inform editorial decision-making.

With a central focus of better serving diverse, under-covered and under-represented communities, the Engagement Editor will work with the Engagement Producer to develop tactics that increases the reach of CPM content with community-centric initiatives that inform, connect, and build empathy. The Engagement Editor will help bring CPM’s audience together around our journalism and incorporate those contributions into coverage when appropriate. They will use industry trends, technology developments and data/analytics to help create CPM’s digital community strategy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works with CPM content leaders to develop an engagement strategy and supporting tactics to better serve target audiences.
  • Creates engagement action plans for WBEZ investigations and features, and works with CPM content leaders to plan, coordinate, and execute engagement-driven content.
  • Serves as lead project manager for content packages with external journalists and partner media organizations to further engagement initiatives.
  • Establishes process for CPM content creators to pitch ideas and collaborate with the Engagement Team, managing time and other team resources.
  • Works collaboratively across all CPM content units, serving as an engagement liaison by attending editorial meetings, championing engagement initiatives and ideas, and identifying opportunities to embed community engagement principles and practices into CPM content creation.
  • Conceives, supervises, and edits content produced by the Engagement Team, exercising editorial control.
  • Creates and produces engagement content to serve the information needs of target communities in multiple formats, including audio stories, utility tools, FAQs, live events, explainer videos, and social media projects.
  • Works with Director of Community Engagement to develop metrics and tools for measuring impact and success of engagement efforts.
  • Manages and organizes language translation and copyediting needs across content units.
  • Help connect the content with the audience, the audience with each other and the audience with our journalists.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing, communications, web design, or related field.
  • A minimum of 5-8 years of experience in an editorial, creative, and/or media production setting.
  • Strong news judgment, writing and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to community engagement and serving diverse, under-covered and under-represented communities.
  • Experience in program development and project management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues across content units, positively influencing decision-making.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines.
  • Ability to work simultaneously on short and long-term projects.
  • Must have good supervisory and communication skills.

Due to current COVID restrictions, you must be able to work remotely at your own designated location with Internet access and you must be willing and able to work at our Navy Pier offices, if needed. Right now, most of our staff is working remotely.
