The Opportunity

The Engagement Producer will be the cornerstone of CPM's growing efforts to serve Chicagoland's BIPOC communities by identifying their information needs, crafting journalism with and for them, and developing distribution plans to ensure our content reaches them.  The primary duty of this position is to conduct targeted outreach to diverse, under-covered and under-represented communities; develop and nuture robust community relationships; and work collaboratively with other WBEZ journalists to producer editorial content that directly serves these audiences. 

In partnership with the Engagement Editor, the Engagement Producer will work internally across content units to serve as an inernal advocate for community-centric editorial initiatives. The Engagement Producer will also work with CPM’s event producers to bring new audiences together around our journalism and incorporate those contributions into editorial coverage.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts robust community outreach including listening sessions, community interviews, and the recruitment and establishment of community partners.
  • Works with Director of Community Engagement and the Sounding Board to stand up and staff councils of community leaders for sustained engagement.
  • Works collaboratively with community leaders to identify information needs.
  • Pitches engagement content initiatives and community distribution tactics, serving as an advocate for engagement content in CPM coverage.
  • Collaborates with WBEZ reporters and other CPM content creators on coverage that serves the information needs of target audiences.
  • Produces engagement content such as FAQs, explainers, and shareable social media content that reaches and serves our target audiences.
  • Organizes and maintains database for community input and feedback.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing, communications, web design, or related field.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in an editorial, creative, and/or media production setting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to community engagement and serving diverse, under-covered, and under-represented communities.
  • Familiarity with digital content management systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues across content units.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Ability to work simultaneously on short and long-term projects.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines.
  • Must have good communication skills and an ability to interact effectively with other departments. 
  • Commitment to fairness and accuracy.

Due to current COVID restrictions, you must be able to work remotely at your own designated location with Internet access and you must be willing and able to work at our Navy Pier offices, if needed. Right now, most of our staff is working remotely.
