Chicago Public Media is one of the largest and most respected media organizations in the country.  The organization has a legacy of innovative program development having launched shows as The American Life, Wait, Don't Tell Me..., Nerdette, Making Obama and the ground-breaking podcast Serial.  Chicago Public Media engages with its listeners and users across multiple platforms, including radio broadcast radio, digital streaming, and mobile apps.  Our flagship station, WBEZ-Chicago (91.5 FM) is Chicagoland's premier media hub for high quality, fact-based journalism and engaging, entertaining audio programs and podcasts.  WBEZ's sister service, Vocalo (91.1 FM in Chicago, vocalo.org), targets a multicultural audience through an urban alternative format.

The Opportunity

Curious City is a people-powered weekly podcast, radio segment and digital project that answers questions the public asks about Chicago, the region, and the people who live here.   

We are looking for someone who has first rate investigative reporting skills, experience working on a creative and collaborative team, and experience writing and producing audio and digital stories.  Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who believes in the power of community centered journalism to connect, inspire, and transform.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Report , write  and produce  stories for  the  Curious City podcast ,  broadcast  and  digital project , to a high standard on deadline. 
  • Tell stories in a  range of  formats including  podcast ,  audio features , investigative series, on-air debriefs,  digital projects, panel discussions, and live events.   
  • Work collaboratively with  your colleagues  on Curious City  to h elp plan, shape and script our weekly podcast broadcast  and digital  stories.  
  • Develop big-picture approaches to covering issues and ideas, while also executing the many small tasks involved in reporting . 
  • Support and enhance audience development strategies to ensure the success of our show. 
  • Work strategically alongside the Senior Editor, Podcasts, to build relationships and partnerships both within and beyond the organization, which can develop into new  stories  and opportunities .  Particular attention should be given to d iverse communities  
  • Ability  to collaborate with other journalists to produce stories and projects of impact and distinction . 
  • Aspiration  to grow as a journalist, and transfer strategies, strengths and abilities to colleagues .

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing, communications, web design, or related field.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of reporting experience, including long-form  storytelling  and investigative journalism .  Audio  reporting  experience is a distinct advantage . 
  • Experience writing  audience driven  storytelling , and experience collaborating with diverse communities to find stories that might otherwise remain untold. 
  • An outstanding track record of producing journalism of the highest caliber and impact. 
  • Excellent writing, editing, communication and organizational skills. 
  • Ability to produce  work  in a range of formats across audio and digital platforms, including  broadcast features ,  podcast  episodes,  and live events. 
  • A familiarity with data-driven analysis and reporting. 
  • Ability to work in an editorially collaborative way – to articulate your own ideas precisely and concisely, and to recognize and build on strong ideas that come from other  team membe rs. 
  • A  dedication to accuracy, fairness, attention to detail  and the highest journalistic and ethical standards. 
  • Ability to approach storytelling in new and creative ways. 
  • Knowledge of the Chicago region’s rich diversity of stories, sectors, and communities is helpful.

This position is a member of SAG-AFTRA. 

Due to current COVID restrictions, you must be able to work remotely at your own designated location with Internet access and you must be willing and able to work at our Navy Pier offices, if needed. Right now, most of our staff is working remotely.
