The Opportunity

Chicago Public Media, home to WBEZ, Chicago’s NPR news station, is looking for a Full Stack Software Engineer to join our renowned Software Engineering team.  Reporting to the Director of Software Engineering, our next Full Stack Software Engineer will collaborate with other Engineers, Product Managers, Producers, Editors and Reporters. They will develop and support a suite of complex and essential applications, most importantly, our React Native cross platform mobile apps. In this role, you will have the opportunity to own one of our most visible and innovative products, the WBEZ and Vocalo Apps, driving innovation in news delivery to create a more informed and empathetic Chicago. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This role demands a unique combination of technical skills, flexibility, and on the job learning.  Our suite of applications includes a wide array of internal and user facing products.  Initially, you will be a primary contributor to our cross platform mobile apps, developing features and improvements using the React Native framework.  In addition, you will support other front and back-end applications.

In addition to coding frontend and backend application logic, you will help support the underlying infrastructure of our suite of applications, participate in daily SCRUMS, regular technical collaboration meetings, and sprint planning meetings.

You will have a strong voice in essential technical and design decisions and work closely with a cross-functional team of thought leaders and content creators to create best-in-class digital news experiences for our audiences.  


Technical Skills Required

  • Portfolio-proven experience in front end web or mobile app development.
  • Experience in HTML5, CSS3, Vanilla JS, and at least 1 server-side language. 
  • Understanding of at least one JS Framework (Vue / Angular), with a willingness to adopt and learn new frameworks on the job.
  • Understanding of SASS and / or SCSS.
  • Experience using Node JS in conjunction with build tools such as Gulp and Webpack in command line.
  • Understanding of performance implications and speed optimization of frontend and backend software applications.

Additional Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills, and a penchant for collaborative workflows.
  • An excitement for news and an interest in public media.

Not Required, but Appreciated

  • Familiarity with Cloud Computing services such as AWS.
  • Experience with frontend media streaming technology.

Due to current COVID restrictions, you must be able to work remotely at your own designated location with Internet access and you must be willing and able to work at our Navy Pier offices, if needed. Right now, most of our staff is working remotely.
