Chicago Public Media has recently acquired the Chicago Sun-Times, one of the Chicago’s two major daily newspapers and among the most storied dailies in the nation.  With the Chicago Sun-Times and WBEZ, Chicago Public Media is now home to one of the largest teams of journalists of any local news organization in the nation. Under the banner of Chicago Public Media, WBEZ and the Chicago Sun-Times will reach more than 2 million people a week in the Chicago area across broadcast, print, and digital channels. Backed by a significant philanthropic commitment, Chicago Public Media plans to substantially increase its investment in local journalism by hiring additional reporters, producers and newsroom personnel in the months and years ahead. 

 

The Opportunity

The Staff Accountant assists the Accounting Manager in the preparation and maintenance of CPM’s financial records and transactions.

 

General Responsibilities

  • Prepare and post monthly journal entries for review, providing support for transactions.
  • Analyze and prepare balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Maintain fixed asset records and prepare and post journal entries for depreciation expense, assets placed in service and disposals.
  • Month-end amortization of prepaid expenses.
  • Month-end revenue reconciliations and classifications.
  • Monthly commission calculations and accrual entries.
  • Liaison with Corporate Sponsorship team, including monthly invoices, review of aging and ad hoc requests.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial reports such as financial statements, variance analysis, and interim grant financial reporting.
  • Assist in work-paper preparation for annual audit, tax filings and state and federal annual reporting.
  • Other responsibilities include but are not limited to participation in grant reports, special projects and ad hoc analyses as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting.
  • Minimum 2 solid years accounting experience, non-profit a plus.
  • CPA or CPA candidate a plus.
  • Public accounting experience preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Intellectual curiosity, initiative, and strong work ethic.
  • Positive team player who can collaborate with the finance team and other teams throughout the organization.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to assess accuracy and data integrity.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to answer accounting and financial questions by researching and interpreting data.
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new IT systems.
  • Ability to keep information confidential.
