The Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs field level maintenance on all equipment assigned or work-loaded to the assigned shop – primarily material handling equipment to include military and commercial forklifts, cranes, bull dozers, tractors, earth movers, and mine sweepers:

• Analyze malfunctions and repairs, rebuild and maintain power equipment, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors and pneumatic tools
• Operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects
• Dismantle and reassemble equipment using government furnished special tools and facilities to perform responsibilities
• Examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges
• Replace defective engines and sub-assemblies, such as transmissions, and tests overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency
• Weld broken parts and structural members
• May direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment
• May repair, adjust and maintain mining machinery, such as stripping and loading shovels, drilling and cutting machines, and continuous mining machines
• A/C repair and service on a wide range of automotive and material handling equipment
• Maintain maintenance records and documentation in accordance with government regulations and local policies
• Properly use, store, accounting for, and disposal of hazardous materials and waste used and generated in the performance of duties
• Comply with all federal, state, and local regulations and procedures for handling and disposal of refrigerant and related hazardous materials
• Movement of material and assets with forklifts and dollies
• Comply with company and government specified safety policies and procedures


Required Skills and Experience

• Certificate of training from vocational school or other recognized source with a major study in automotive maintenance, or other related field
• In lieu of formal course work, a combination of college credits, on-the-job training, other formalized training, or ASE certifications may be considered
• Eight years’ experience in directly relevant work
• Ability to comply with all established environmental regulations, methods, quality standards, and time schedules applicable to this position
• Ability to interpret and apply technical instruction, schematics, and diagrams
• Possesses personal tools that meets the required tool list
• Possess a valid State Motor Vehicle Operator License.
• U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain base access
• Must be able to pass a criminal pre-employment background check and drug screening
• Must be able to obtain and maintain Common Access Card (CAC) requirements


Desired Skills and Experience

• MRAPS, M-ATVs and JLTV/HUMVEE Mechanic experience
• EPA certification in Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Program to be compliant with section 609 of the Clean Air Act a plus
