there are openings for adjunct faculty to teach in the program for the doctorate in social sciences (dSocSci).

Prevention science is interdisciplinary, integrating theories and methodologies from the disciplines of public health, human development, developmental psychopathology, education, behavioral sciences (e.g., psychology, sociology, developmental neuroscience), economics, evaluation, epidemiology, and public policy and administration. Program objectives and focus for the DSocSci include training in three primary areas: (1) the production or generation of research-based knowledge that focuses on increasing the understanding of risk and protective factors and processes related to prevention and health promotion in human populations; (2) the translation of evidence into effective programs and policies that positively impact the well-being of children, youth, adults, families, and their communities; and (3) the development of successful partnerships with community, county, state, and national organizations to disseminate effective programs into routine practice in local, regional, national, and international settings.

Requirements:

Adjunct teaching applicants must have a Doctorate degree in an accredited program in the social or health sciences field from an accredited institution.  In addition to the education requirements, applicants must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in the social or health sciences field. Teaching experience at the higher-education level is preferred. Certification as a Prevention Specialist is a plus. Applicants must be detail-oriented and able to work with a diverse population. Additional requirements are:

  • Understand the mission and values of Wilmington University.
  • Submit a Teaching Philosophy, following these guidelines:  Provide a description of your teaching philosophy. Your description should be no more than 1.5 pages in length and should include the following information: (1) A brief statement (5-7 sentences) explaining how you plan to provide excellence in teaching, relevancy of curriculum, and individual attention to students, which is the cornerstone of Wilmington University’s mission statement. (2) Based on your statement above, please briefly answer the following questions: (a) Explain your beliefs, theories and/or methods regarding teaching and how they shape your concept of successful teaching? (b) How do you know when you are teaching effectively? (c) How do you develop and maintain positive relationships with students? (d) How do you create a supportive learning environment? and (3) Include a summary of your thoughts on education and the role that you feel you could play in developing students to be successful in their discipline, career, and life. (This statement should be attached to the application via the attachments section of the application.)  In the area on the application, please enter "see attached".
  • Good computer skills and be able to use MS Office software.
  • Experience in using Canvas (Learning Management System) technology is a plus.
  • Must be able to abide by tight deadlines required of a 7 week Block format curriculum.
  • Must have knowledge of various instructional strategies designed to meet the course instructional objectives and add to student learning.
  • Must be able to develop a personalized course outline designed to follow a generic syllabus provided by the University.
  • Must be able to provide relevant work experience to the instructional content of the course.
  • Qualified applicants will be required to complete Wilmington University’s Canvas Training and a 3-week online training program so as to demonstrate online mastery in the classroom.
  • Qualified applicants may be asked to present a writing sample as part of the interview process.
  • Qualified Applicants may be asked to present a 10-minute teaching sample for the Program’s Director and Chair as part of the interview process.
