About the Role – ESG Analyst

The ESG Analyst will be a supporting member of the Investment team and will collaborate with the Central Research Team and Portfolio Managers by integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) analysis into Thornburg’s investment processes. The candidate’s primary responsibilities be supporting the investment team by enabling access to and interpretation of data sources, conducting thematic research on ESG topics, managing research notes, and serving as a liaison with key departments. Prior buy-side ESG experience is preferred, however, passion for sustainable investing and teachability are more important.

The ESG Analyst will have the following responsibilities:

  • Conduct ESG analysis of portfolio companies, which includes collecting data and researching specific environmental and/or social issues impacting the issuer.
  • Engage with investment team members about their needs related to ESG research and infrastructure
  • Collaborate with distribution to create and support messaging and content on developments in the ESG realm
  • Attend industry webinars, conferences and other events.
  • Stays current on ESG trends and developments about finance and sustainable investing (Ex. create an analysis of the environmental risks facing portfolio companies based on a large data set available on those companies).

Experience and Personal Characteristics

The successful candidate will have a passion for sustainable investing and a desire to build a career in this industry.  While a formal science background is not required, the ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate academic or professional experience tackling environmental or social topics and synthesizing research into conclusions or recommendations.

Additional experience and attributes include:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Collaborative mindset and the ability to take ownership of a project from start to finish


  • Familiarity with coding languages  
  • Familiarity with financial markets
  • Experience with market data services (ex. FactSet, Bloomberg)
  • Master’s degree or progress toward CFA designation

Candidates will be asked to provide:

  • Research work sample; university or professional project that demonstrates background, process, and conclusions. Alternatively, a writing sample that demonstrates a narrative argument on a topic.
  • Cover letter outlining reasons for wanting to work on ESG topics in financial services
