The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is a national museum dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region. Located in the heart of Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the CMHR rises from the Prairie earth at The Forks, which has been a meeting place for over six thousand years.

Purpose of Position

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is centered around the idea that respect and understanding of human rights can serve as a positive force for change in the world. The Digital Platforms Content Designer will support our collective efforts to build a workplace culture that is inclusive, innovative and focused on inspiring action.

Reporting to the Manager, Digital Platforms, the Digital Platforms Content Designer (possibility of working remotely) is responsible for planning, implementing and coordinating digital content and digitization activities, supporting both in-gallery and remote audience end points. The incumbent will develop and implement highly engaging and accessible digital storytelling experiences across multiple platforms and technologies, working with CMHR’s team of internal and external software developers. The position is also responsible for ensuring established presentation standards and semantic structures are adhered to, and for keeping informed of emerging approaches and best practices, offering expertise on related technologies and transmedia content consumption and use.

The incumbent works ­within the emerging and rapidly changing media and technology fields and is required to continuously stay abreast of industry trends. The incumbent will be a critical thinker, innovator, problem solver, and enthusiastic collaborator.


Key Responsibilities

  • Contributes to a culture that promotes respect, equity, inclusion and innovation, and models anti-racist and accountable behaviours.
  • Works effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team of software developers, designers and other staff to design, develop, code, test and document new highly accessible digital media, web and exhibit applications.
  • Performs and oversees content maintenance of digital platform products (coordinating, rewriting, editing for SEO, user experience and accessibility purposes) for both in-gallery and remote audiences, and cross-purpose platforms.
  • Coordinates and produces digital media content (image, video, audio, text, etc.) for use across the Museum’s digital platforms. Is involved in supporting requirements gathering for digitization, preservation and delivery workflows relating to digital objects.
  • Is responsible for the capture, quality control, optimization, gathering of administrative, technical, structural and descriptive metadata, and for the tracking, archiving and storage of resulting digital objects.
  • Designs, develops and implements inclusive digital content experiences for in-gallery and remote audiences using innovative digital storytelling techniques.
  • Integrates digital engagement strategies with inter-divisional programming activities and assorted publication activities.
  • Monitors trends, behaviours and usability as related to CMHR digital platform projects, products and devices for the creation and evolution of cross-media publication standards and policies.
  • Prepares analytics reports, dashboards and data visualization and makes recommendations based on those reports.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary projects teams as a subject matter expert (SME) for digital platforms, digital content publication, cross- and transmedia.
  • Participates in the scenario design and development of user, accessibility and acceptance testing for Museum applications.
  • Reviews and advises on interface texts, system messages, alt text, descriptions and meta tags, and other general interface and usability focused text and nomenclature.


Required Qualifications

  • A post-secondary education in Web Design and/or Computer Science, plus a minimum of 2-5 years of experience in a related role, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Commitment to human rights principles, including respect, equity, inclusion and dignity for all.
  • Ability to read and understand in both official languages.
  • An excellent understanding of web technologies and social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, YouTube, Google Analytics, and other means of electronic publishing.
  • Familiarity with search engine optimization, usability and accessibility theory and practices.
  • Experience with web technologies (HTML5/CSS3, JavaScript, SASS and web content management systems), WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated experience writing content for the web and/or other electronic media.
  • Strong knowledge of and experience with evolving multimedia technologies.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Exceptional time management skills, with the ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.


Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate with proficiency in both official languages, oral and written.
  • Experience in the design and development of mixed-media environments and transmedia storytelling.
  • Knowledge of and experience with numerous productivity software suites and applications such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, etc.
  • Experience working for or providing similar service to a museum, cultural institution, or similar entity.
  • Knowledge of design process and UI/UX terminology.
