As a Mechanical Engineer within Paramit’s Product Development Group, you will participate in design and development efforts in a broad range of areas such as mechatronics, fluidics, pneumatics, thermal control, optics, chassis and enclosures for life science instrumentation, diagnostic tools and point-of-care devices, as well as their associated consumables/cartridges. Mechanical Engineers are a critical part of a cross-functional team that develops complex instrumentation for customers ranging from young start-ups to well-established companies.  Projects are typically fast-paced, technically diverse and rely on a close-knit, interdisciplinary team comprised of other Mechanical Engineers and Designers, a Technical Project Manager, System Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Software/Firmware Engineers, Consumables Engineers, Industrial Designers and Product Development Engineers. These teams work with Paramit’s world class manufacturing group to seamlessly transition the products into manufacturing using our transfer-less process, which results in reduced time-to-market and fewer issues.


  • Design and develop mechanical systems and sub-systems for life science instrumentation, diagnostic tools and point-of-care devices. These may include mechatronics, optical, thermal, fluidic and micro-fluidic aspects
  • Ensure all requirements and specifications are being met and that all systems, sub-systems and components are being designed or selected for reliability, manufacturability and serviceability. This will require regular engagement with our manufacturing engineers, at all stages of development
  • Present concepts, designs and data in formal concept/design review meetings and regular group meetings
  • Develop, document and execute processes and procedures needed for breadboard, prototype and pilot evaluation and integration stages. This includes writing test protocols and test reports
  • Design, build and operate fixtures, breadboards and prototype systems 


  • Must have
    • At least a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering with a minimum of 2 years of relevant industry experience in life science instrumentation or diagnostic/medical device development. M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are preferred. Candidates with exceptional aptitude and experience from other fields or disciplines will also be considered
    • Contributed to the design and development of at least one life science instrument or diagnostic device, from feasibility through manufacturing
    • A high degree of motivation, creativity, and resourcefulness to help us solve challenging problems and develop cutting-edge products
    • A solid understanding of physics and engineering fundamentals
    • A positive, can-do attitude
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Demonstrated success working in multidisciplinary team environments
    • Proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D modeling, 2D drawings and FEA/CFD simulations
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio and PowerPoint
  • Must have demonstrated proficiency in at least one of the following areas, preferably in the context of life               science/biotech/biomedical device development:
    • Design of mechanisms such as drawers, lids, clamps and grippers that utilize linkages, gears, racks/pinions, slides, bearings, bushings, springs and cams
    • Design of motion control systems utilizing stepper and BLDC motors, linear actuators, belt drives and ball-screw drives
    • Design of micro-fluidic, fluidic and/or pneumatic system designs utilizing pumps, valves, accumulators, regulators, pressure sensors, flow meters and manifolds
    • Design of thermal systems utilizing TECs and resistive heaters and thermistors/thermocouples/RTDs
    • Integration of optical systems such as light sources (lasers, LEDs), objectives, lenses, filters, mirrors, detectors (CMOS/CCD/MPPC/PMT) and auto-focusing systems
  • Must have demonstrated proficiency in the design of at least two of the following:
    • Machined parts
    • Sheet metal parts and assemblies
    • Injection molded parts
    • Cast parts
    • Weldments
  • Preferred
    • Experience interfacing directly with customers and clients
    • Understanding of biochemistry, molecular biology and diagnostic assays
    • Understanding of techniques such as microarrays, DNA sequencing, ELISA, PCR, qPCR, HPLC, electrophoresis and fluorescence microscopy
    • An understanding of basic design control under ISO 9001 and ISO 13485
    • Knowledge of GD&T and have experience performing tolerance stack analyses
    • Experience with productivity, communication and analysis tools such as Visio, Teams, Project, ImageJ, R, JMP, Matplotlib, Mathcad and MATLAB.
    • Experience with instrument/hardware control tools such as Python and LabVIEW
    • Experience with rapid prototyping tools such as 3D printing, laser cutting and CNC machining
    • Experience with shop tools such as drill presses, band/table/miter saws, lathes and tap wrenches
    • Experience with test and measurement equipment such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, force/temperature/pressure gauges, calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, etc.
