Position Summary

The Director of Public Policy & Government Relations will work closely with the Chief Public Policy Officer (CPPO) to support and execute the firm’s public policy strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives and industry trends, particularly in renewable energy, opportunity zones, and/or historic preservation. This role involves participating in policy discussions, working groups, and industry coalitions to influence legislative and regulatory developments that impact the firm’s clients. This position requires direct engagement with lawmakers, federal agencies, policy coalitions, and industry organizations to advocate for key policy issues.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Chief Public Policy Officer to execute the firm’s public policy strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives and industry trends, particularly in renewable energy, opportunity zones, and/or historic preservation.

Work closely with the CPPO to oversee and participate in policy discussions, working groups, and industry coalitions to influence legislative and regulatory developments impacting the firm’s clients.

  • Engage with lawmakers and their staff, federal agencies, policy coalitions, and industry organizations on key policy issues related to renewable energy, opportunity zones, and/or historic preservation.
  • Assist the CPPO in drafting, reviewing, and providing insights for the Notes from Novogradac blog.
  • Monitor, research, summarize, analyze and interpret legislative, regulatory, and policy developments assessing their impact on the firm and its clients.
  • Draft written materials for use with internal and external to promote renewable energy, opportunity zones, and historic preservation policies.
  • Anticipate potential renewable energy, opportunity zones, and historic preservation proposals and draft responses.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key policymakers, regulators, industry leaders, and professional associations in coordination with the CPPO.
  • Identify opportunities to generate revenue through public policy engagements and services.
  • Work with internal teams and client-facing teams, to ensure alignment in policy-related messaging.
  • In consultation with the CPPO, develop policy briefs and other materials to articulate the firm’s perspective on critical issues.
  • In the absence of the CPPO, provide regular updates and insights to leadership on public policy developments and implications.
  • Provide guidance on navigating regulatory changes and their potential impact.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and public policy issues, particularly in renewable energy, opportunity zones and/or historic preservation with the ability to assess their impact on the firm and its clients.
  • Ability to influence decision-makers and advocate effectively for firm and industry priorities.
  • Strong analytical, interpretive, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in leading advocacy initiatives and engaging with senior government officials.
  • Ability to deliver persuasive and articulate presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to distill complex policy issues for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to build strong relationships and networks.
  • Strategic thinker with a proactive and collaborative approach.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, effectively prioritize a fast-paced and varied workload, and effectively manage a variety of concurrent and shifting priorities.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in public policy, business, finance or related area plus 5-10 years of experience in public policy, government affairs, or a related role.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in public policy, law, or related field. Experience working in congress or federal agencies. Experience with some or all of the following: Low Income Housing Tax Credit, Housing and Urban Development, New Market Tax Credit, Historic Rehabilitation, Opportunity Zones, Community Development and Renewable/Clean Energy is strongly preferred. Experience with the accounting industry and related consulting is a plus.

  • Compensation: $160,000 to $180,000 depending on experience.  More is possible if experience dictates.
