The Heavy Equipment & Diesel Technician Internship provides a tremendous opportunity for a degree seeking individual to learn and become familiar with the mining and aggregate industry. Internship participants will gain experience in many different aspects of production and maintenance within NESL. Depending on length of internship, interns will work on the various pieces of mobile equipment that support production (Ex. mid/large loaders, 60 Ton haul trucks, excavators, backhoes, welders, small yard equipment). Ideally, this program will help guide interns toward a career path that aligns with their interests and abilities. In addition, this program seeks to provide permanent employment opportunities upon graduation.

Internship Structure

A mentor will be assigned and will work with each intern for the duration of the internship. The Mobile Equipment Supervisor will provide work assignments, training and general oversight of the Intern.  In addition, interns will interact with other operational leaders in the Quarry and in our Hot Mixed Asphalt plants.  These interactions and relationships are intentionally designed to help the intern develop their skillset and grow professionally.

Assignment Overview

Interns will have an opportunity to gain hands on experience, both in shop and in field, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining equipment. We are looking for an intern willing to take their classroom experiences and apply them in hands on work assignments.  This involves the ability to plan out a repair task, listen to instructions, observe and learn from experienced Coworkers to safely perform work.

Duties & Position Responsibilities

NESL’s Maintenance Teams perform repairs and preventive maintenance to ensure the operations has reliable mobile equipment. Every team member is responsible for maintaining housekeeping and organization of the work area as well as following NESL’s policies and procedures.  Each Intern will have the responsibility to stop work if something is unsafe.

  • Learn and follow the preventative maintenance requirements on each piece of equipment to maximize equipment uptime and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot issues and repair damaged or malfunctioning equipment. This may require reading and understanding drawings, operations manuals, manufacturer’s instructions, engineering specifications, and other troubleshooting methods.
  • Learn and assist in the inspection and repair process. This includes the various components related to the mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Perform all work according to OSHA / MSHA safety policies.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a 2-year degree program in diesel mechanics, agricultural equipment mechanics or related study.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain a safe and clean environment.
