Scope

The Paving Internship provides a tremendous opportunity for a degree seeking individual to learn and becoming familiar with the paving industry. Paving interns will gain experience in many different aspects of New Enterprise’s HMA paving business. Depending on length of internship, interns will be exposed to various paving projects. Ideally, this program will help guide interns toward a career path that aligns with their interests and abilities. In addition, this program seeks to provide permanent employment opportunities upon graduation

Internship Structure

Each intern will be assigned to a foreperson for mentorship and on-the-job training. The foreperson will incorporate the intern into their crew and will remain with the intern for the duration of the internship. As the intern learns and gains experience, the intern will begin to work as a contributing member of the crew. In addition to the foreperson, the intern will meet with the General Superintendent periodically.

Duties & Responsibilities

The primary focus of the Paving Intern is to learn about HMA paving and gain practical experience in paving operations. As part of this, Interns will be expected to:

• Learn about and support the safety initiatives of NESL by adhering to safe work practices and identifying and reporting any safety risks. Interns will be exposed to Safety & Environmental rules, regulations, and procedures as set forth by OSHA and company policies.

• General laboring across all areas of construction sites. Interns will learn by doing and assist the forepersons, equipment operators, carpenters, and other skilled tradesmen.

• Operate assigned equipment in accordance with NESL site specific training and safety guidelines. 

• Learn the fundamentals of equipment maintenance to maximize uptime. This includes performing preventive maintenance, routine repairs, general cleaning, and conducting pre-shift inspections.

• Maintain overall housekeeping of jobsites. As members of their crew, interns will keep their work area and equipment in good working order so that projects stay safe, organized, and focused.

Qualifications

• Must be actively enrolled in a post-secondary degree program in construction, heavy equipment operations, or related field.

• Familiarity with construction and construction related activities

• Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously

• Positive attitude and willingness to grow and learn.
