The Engineering Internship provides a tremendous opportunity for a degree seeking individual to learn and become familiar with the Aggregate, Asphalt, and Ready-Mix Concrete industry. Engineering Interns will gain experience in many different aspects of New Enterprise’s Materials business. Depending on length of internship, interns will be exposed to various Materials segment projects. Ideally, this program will help guide interns toward a career path that aligns with their interests and abilities. In addition, this program seeks to provide permanent employment opportunities upon graduation.

Internship Structure

A mentor will be assigned to each intern and will remain with the intern for the duration of the internship.  In addition, interns will interact with key positions across the Materials Division including Project Managers, Plant Superintendents, Area Managers, Departmental Managers, and vendors. These interactions and relationships are intentionally designed to help the intern develop their skillset and grow professionally.

Rotational Assignment Overview

Rotations will vary from office work to field and operational assignments. The primary function in each assignment will be to assist day-to-day processes and operations and create a work product through proper documentation. In addition, all interns will be responsible for learning and adhering to required safety protocols within each assignment.

Travel to and from assignments and jobsites will be required. Travel expenses are reimbursable according to NESL Policy.

Plant Layout & Asset Structuring (AggFlow + JDE Integration)

  • Utilize AggFlow to develop and refine plant layouts for existing Asphalt and RMC facilities.
  • Validate process flow from feed to final product, ensuring accurate representation of fixed plant equipment.
  • Partner with Asset Managers to:
    Develop a comprehensive asset list for each facility
    Standardize equipment naming conventions
  • Capture key metadata (equipment type, location, drive HP, lubrication type, criticality)
  • Prepare structured asset data for upload into JDE (JD Edwards) to:
    Support development of a fixed plant preventive maintenance program
    Improve asset traceability and equipment hierarchy
    Streamline and standardize the oil sampling program

Vibration Monitoring Program Support

  • Assist in the rollout of vibration monitoring across aggregate plants.
  • Coordinate with plant personnel and reliability teams to:
    Track installation status of sensors
    Verify equipment tagging and database accuracy
  • Participate in bi-weekly vibration review calls:
    Review trend data
    Document findings and action items
    Track corrective actions and follow-up tasks
     

Project Management

  • Assist Project Manager in the preparation and maintenance of material source of supplies, costing, purchase orders, Subcontractor Agreements, Project Budgets, and value engineering.
  • Become proficient in the use of Microsoft Project.

Field Measurements

  • Assist with gathering field information and measurements at NESL locations, to include discussing issues with plant personnel. 

Design of Plant Retrofit/Repairs

  • Assist NESL Engineering with developing solutions by utilizing AutoCAD to generate drawings for bidding purposes and/or inside NESL personnel use.

Estimating Plant Retrofits/Repairs

  • Estimate cost of plant retrofit and/or repair by soliciting bids to outside vendors
  • Compile costs utilizing Microsoft Excel.

Quality Control

  • Assist in gathering belt cuts to determine the performance of plant equipment.

Qualifications

  • Must be actively enrolled in degree program in business, engineering, or related field.
  • Familiarity with construction and construction related activities.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD & scheduling software is a plus.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong math skills and attention to detail.
