The incumbent will be a key member of the MBA’s commercial real estate research team, providing research, analysis and programming support to the Research Group and MBA members. Duties include conducting MBA’s industry and benchmarking surveys; making programming and other process enhancements for the purpose of new analysis and building efficiencies into existing processes; developing relationships and working with contacts at MBA member firms; performing data collection and data review functions for MBA surveys and studies; producing and disseminating reports and presentations on commercial real estate markets; providing a quality control function to ensure accuracy of all outputs; coordinating aspects of production and order fulfillment of research products as needed; responding to customer data requests and inquiries; and utilizing MBA’s information systems to support department objectives.  S(he) will also produce additional analyses (as needed), charts and presentation materials using data from MBA industry surveys and studies.




  1. Serve as Data Scientist, supporting the Associate Vice President, CRE Research and other members of the Research Group in developing data, analysis and insights across a range of topics and data sets, including:
    1. Perform survey outreach, data collection, analysis, presentation and support: Work to identify and collaborate with staff at MBA member firms to collect information for a variety of projects; integrate data into MBA systems; analyze and synthesize the information; develop tables, charts, summaries and other outputs; disseminate the results and respond to questions.
    2. Conduct MBA original industry surveys, including those covering originations rankings, industry lending volumes, servicing roles, loan maturity profiles, loan performance and more.
    3. Perform analysis and reporting of federal and other data, including on mortgage debt outstanding, delinquency rates and more.
    4. Support benchmarking efforts, including analysis of assumptions used in accounting of mortgage servicing rights, use of technology by CRE finance firms, performance of life company mortgages, industry human capital trends and more.
    5. Support MBA research and analysis covering affordable housing issues.
    6. Cross-train with other data analysts withing the Research group.
  2. Support MBA’s Peer Business Roundtables. Workshops and more
    1. Assist Research Department staff with MBA’s Peer Business Roundtable meetings of Human Resources, Technology, Finance and Accounting, Marketing, Green Lending and other leaders from MBA member firms.
  3. Respond to member requests & support order fulfillment
    1. Respond to member requests and questions about MBA commercial/multifamily research products and activities.
    2. Work with MBA systems and staff in in preparing, disseminating and supporting the release of MBA Research Reports
  4. Work with MBA staff within the Research Group and throughout the organization



The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, analytical and capable of handling multiple tasks simultaneously.  College or advanced degree in quantitative field, such as economics, finance, systems and operations, business administration, or other required.   Experience working with mortgage and/or similar data sets preferred.  The candidate should have six months to one year experience working in data and analytics (advanced academic coursework and/or previous work experience).

In addition, the individual should be very comfortable with programming and new technologies.  Mastery of Microsoft Office software and knowledge of operational databases required.  (Individual will be expected to regularly use database and other software such as SQL, Python, R, MS Access, Visual Basic and/or advanced Microsoft Office functions.) 

This position will entail engagement with executives at member firms across the industry and hence will require exceptional communication skills.
