The Life Skills Trainer (CLST) will be assigned to individuals with Developmental/Intellectual Disabilities, between the ages of 5-21. In some cases, these individuals may be over 21 and have aged out of Special Education Services.  

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, direct 1:1 instruction, conducting assessments, generating Vocational Assessment Summaries complete with post-secondary goals and parent training on effective strategies necessary to increase life skill independence of the learner

The Life Skills Trainer will work in conjunction with a treatment team, the student and their family. The team will implement goals, as well as analyze the progress and effectiveness of treatment and programming.

Job Responsibilities:

  • 1:1 Direct Instruction in Independent Living Skills, Community Integration and Self Help.
  •  Ensure safety for students who exhibit challenging behaviors in the home and in the community.
  •  Work in conjunction with the assigned team members. 
  •  Review programs and transition plan to assist provider and child in attaining their individualized goals.
  •  Assist in parent training regarding activities of daily living.
  •  Act as a resource for team members. 
  •  Participate in Team and Transition meetings relevant to the assigned caseload.
  • Participate in generating post-secondary goals and writing Vocational Assessment Summaries. 

This is a great opportunity for Special Education Teachers that have experience working with older learners. 

Qualifications:

  • NYS Licensure is required  in any of the following or similar fields:
    • Social Work (LCSW or higher)
    • Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
    • Special Education (Ms. Ed-appropriately licensed and certified) 
    • School Psychology 
  • Bi-Lingual (Spanish) is a plus, but not required. 
  • Cannot concurrently work for the Department of Education. Candidates must be one year removed to be considered. 
  • Must have experience working in the field of Developmental Disabilities/Autism Spectrum Disorders.
  •  Must have experience/feel comfortable working in the community and in family homes.  
  • Shows sensitivity to the needs of the child and the family, as well as cultural differences.
  •  Computer literacy, including MS Word, Excel, etc.
  •  Must be a team player and able to work well with others.
  •  Must have a reliable means of transportation around the five boroughs.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively. 
  • Must demonstrate good writing ability and grammar. 

This is a part time fee for service position.
