The role will provide direction, organization, creativity, and strategy regarding talent, promotions, and production necessary to produce a marketable radio station.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Listen, develop, and maintain informed opinions on music supplied to the radio station  
  • Make decisions on the music for airplay  
  • Assign and direct on-air staff in the production of commercials for clients
  • Review and edit material from clients to ensure conformance to commercials and promotional announcements
  • Provide creative support to the sales department and clients concerning commercials and promotional announcements
  • Schedule and troubleshoot daily music logs
  • Maintain/update database and music software as required.
  • Generate and distribute music reports as required.
  • Meet with music reps, promotion people from record labels, and managers on music day
  • Collaborate with music representatives, promotion people from record labels, and or managers on music call days
  • Attend and coordinate mix show meetings to ensure the best music is placed on the mix show list
  • Generate and distribute the weekly mix show list and weekly request sheet
  • Oversee production elements for the station
  • Recommend programming, promotions, and marketing opportunities
  • Serve as the programming/sales liaison
  • Monitor stations to ensure formats, commercials, and promos meet required standards
  • Secure national talent for station events
  • Schedule station music daily through Music Master
  • Write station promos imaging Work closely with the Sales and Promotions Department to create non-traditional revenue opportunities
  • Writes script, contests, and interview questions.
  • Memorizes script, reads, or ad-libs to identify station, introduce and close shows, and announce station breaks, commercials, or public service information.
  • Prepares and creates a topical show by gathering information from wire copy, periodicals, computer and television.
  • Reads news flash to keep audience informed of important events.
  • Records interviews of guest, musical or other famous or public personalities, and edits interviews.
  • Interviews guest, and moderates panel or discussion show to entertain audience.
  • Answers phone lines and interviews members of listening audience who telephone musical requests. Airs contests according to the specifications of the program director.
  • Plans and stages community events, including hosting and assisting at charity functions.
  • Attends live, in-person appearances as scheduled by the station or requested by clients.
  • Schedule on-air talent on a weekly and as-required basis
  • Coordinate with other staff members to ensure programming airs as required
  • Train appropriate staff on the operation of on-air technology as required
  • Communicate daily with the Operations Manager/Program Director to report and trouble-shoot on all operational discrepancies and issues of non-performance
  • Attend, assist, and help coordinate major station promotions and promotions     
  • To work with the teams and online Web Editor to ensure content and promotions are relevant to the target audience
  • To assist the Operations Manager/Program Director with listener complaints and respond to any music queries from listeners
  • To appropriately represent the company when attending relevant industry and community-related events on an ongoing basis.
  • Ensure that appropriate continuity is maintained at all times while on the air. This includes:
  • Programming links are set-ups and Transitions (music identification to co-host, or any pre-recorded  
  • To appropriately re-enforce the radio station brand and program at all times. Station call letters, positioning statements, creative hooks, cross-promotion, and back-sells
  • Conduct time checks as needed, weather, temperature checks, and event information
  • In-depth knowledge of the music being played. Staying in touch with music and all related issues
  • Contribute and support the creation of the show daily.
  • Participation in daily pre-show content prep
  • Oversee the creation and posting of original online content that meets company standards on social networking platforms: Websites, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, other new developing platforms
  •  Prepare for professional appearance in public when and where required through:
  • Participation in station remote broadcasts
  • Representation at charity events, community events

 

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Must be a creative thinker and possess a high level of people skills. Ability to be multi-tasked, flexible, and work long hours including some weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Ability to read, and analyze business practices, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to operate boards, remote and online equipment
  • Assist as needed with the programming department in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Lead interviewing, hiring process, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance reviews for direct reports; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Ability to prepare reports, and business correspondence, and ensure policy and procedure are adhered to
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to define problems asses data, and interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions 
  •  The employee must occasionally lift, and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Complies with Network and Urban One’s mandatory on-time and adheres to related course deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team to include but not limited to:
    • Provide regular constructive feedback
    • Resolve issues/conflicts with diplomacy in a timely manner
    • Provide ongoing guidance and support for growth and development
    • Deploy effective coaching skills
    • Practical understanding of anti-harassment and discrimination laws
    • Ability to effectively administer performance reviews, and corrective action plans as appropriate.
    • Ensure team (s) attend mandatory department and/or mandatory company training (s) as required.
  • Submit to a criminal background check
  • Legal right to work in the United States

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Associate degree (AA) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school preferred; five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
