Survey and Mapping Technician 1 (Utility Location)

Location: 22211 US Highway 19 N., Building 16, Clearwater, FL 

Schedule: Monday – Thursday; 6:30 AM – 5:00 PM

The Survey and Mapping and Subsurface Utility Engineering (S.U.E.) workers will play a crucial role in infrastructure projects by providing essential information about underground utilities to ensure the safety of workers and the public, as well as the integrity of existing infrastructure. 

Technical field and limited office work assisting with underground utility locating for survey and mapping projects. Employees in this class operate various types of equipment in day-to-day operations to accurately locate underground utilities, such as water pipes, gas lines, and electrical cables as part of a survey team, and perform a variety of technical tasks. Work is completed under the direction of a Professional Surveyor and Mapper. The Public Works Survey and Mapping Division has a variety of customers and provides a wide range of deliverables with a major focus on supporting the County's Capital Improvement Program as well as other initiatives. The Division consists of both office and field assigned staff.  We are looking for a candidate that is action-oriented, has good communication skills and a can-do attitude, and is a continual learner. A successful employee in this position will want to learn the functions of the division and be flexible, positive and a real team player.

What Would You Do?

• Operation and care of S.U.E. equipment.
• Use of various tools and techniques such as ground penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic equipment and utility maps to accurately identify and locate underground utilities.
• Recording and documenting all relevant data pertaining to utility locations, including sketches, measurements, depths, types of utilities, and any other pertinent information.
• Read and interpret historical records and maps.

What Do you Need To Have?

• Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. Certificate, basic knowledge of computers and keyboard familiarity, and at least 1 year of experience working as a technician on a team providing S.U.E. and/or Survey and Mapping services; or
• An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
• Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver's License upon hire with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.
• Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
• Basic computer skills.
• Possession of sufficient physical stamina to work long hours outdoors under various field conditions with exposure to traffic, extreme heat and rainfall.

Highly Desirable

• Experience designating and locating subsurface utilities for design and construction.
• Experience using the 811 ticketing system and coordinating with utility owners to gather information.
• Knowledge of general construction principles and practices.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of the techniques and practices of Subsurface Utility Engineering.
• Skilled in the use of S.U.E. instruments such as but not limited to: Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Electronic Designating Equipment, Vacuum Excavation Vehicle, and data collection systems
• Ability to interpret drawings, plans and maps.
• Ability to utilize basic computer applications.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
