Structural Engineer (Substation Projects)
Job Summary
POWER Engineers is seeking an experienced, energetic, self-starting team member with a strong structural engineering background to perform engineering design activities for electrical substations. This position is in the Power Delivery Substation Department of our Overland Park, Kansas office. Flexibility is available for a hybrid work environment (employee will need to live within driving distance of the office).
Roles and Responsibilities
- All aspects of substation structural design including preparation of steel performance drawings, fabrication drawings and foundation design.
- Development of steel and concrete construction specifications, cost estimates, engineering proposals and project schedules.
- Understand and incorporate typical structural code requirements.
- Coordination with all disciplines contributing to electrical substation design.
- Preparation of calculation packages to satisfy client and code requirements.
- Perform QA/QC for deliverables to clients.
- Support Project Manager and Project Engineer with project reporting needs.
- Support proposal development.
- Support the mentorship and training of other team members.
- Shall understand and adhere to client standards and processes while working individually or within a team to complete complex and technically challenging designs.
- Occasional travel will be required.
Required Education/Experience
- Ability to function as a Structural Engineer in the Overland Park location of our Substation Business Unit.
- BSCE (Bachelor of Science in Civil/Structural Engineering) degree from an accredited college.
- Three (3) or more years of experience in structural engineering.
- Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam.
- Mechanical reasoning skills and attention to detail.
- Finite Element modeling experience; Risa3D or STAAD Pro.
- Familiarity with structural analysis, concrete design, steel design, soil mechanics and foundation design
- Demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, tracking and organizing many tasks of varying importance and size.
- Ability to perform calculations to size steel structures and concrete foundations.
- Proven ability and desire to mentor and help others.
- A strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills in order to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship.
Desired Education/Experience
- Five (5) or more years of experience in structural engineering.
- Seismic design experience.
- Experience with RISA, MathCAD, LPile, and STAAD are beneficial.
- Professional Engineering license (PE) or the ability to obtain licensure and ability to obtain licensure in multiple states.
- Ability to successfully participate in multiple projects concurrently and manage budgets and schedules.
