Description

The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) development team has a strong track record of raising significant resources from a diverse group of funding sources to support PPIC’s nonpartisan, independent, fact-based approach to public policy. The development associate will join the institute at an exciting time as we seek to advance our goal for a brighter future for California and envision effective, efficient, and equitable public policies that improve the well-being of our state’s people, communities, and environment.

The development associate is an integral member of our dynamic development team, securing donor and sponsor support, and providing administrative support to ensure the effective and efficient daily operations of the institute’s philanthropic activities. The development associate reports to the director of development. This is a full-time position based in San Francisco.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the day-to-day operations of PPIC’s unrestricted giving programs including the annual year-end appeal, annual sponsorship, and corporate giving programs. This includes prospect research, solicitation and renewals, stewardship and recognition, logistics and reporting.
  • Provides general administrative support to the development team: organizes meetings; maintains and communicates fundraising timelines and objectives; ensures that fundraising is done in an efficient and cost-effective way.
  • Supports the director of development on major gift prospecting, research, moves management, cultivation, and stewardship.
  • Organizes cultivation and stewardship events, such as event receptions and VIP gatherings.  Coordinates invitations and lists, event-related materials, and background information for staff.
  • Provides support to colleagues on development-related activities including donor visits, meetings, events, and proposals. Works proactively on background research and logistics for meetings and events.
  • Communicates with donors on gift status, events, and other activities. Responds to development related inquiries from PPIC leadership, staff, funders, and the public.
  • Serves as primary development CRM administrator for prospect and donor management and reporting. Handles confidential gift records, donor files, gift processing, and maintenance of grants and donor records in Salesforce. Maintains and creates detailed reports that reflect donor and grant activity and progress towards goals. 
  • Works with finance department on gift acceptance and grant reporting protocols and procedures. Ensures timely acknowledgment of gifts.
  • Drafts and proofs communication materials including letters, emails, proposals, solicitation materials, stewardship reports, and other correspondence.
  • Assists with other institutional events and activities as needed.
  • Attends community events and pursues networking opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, plus a minimum of two years comparable experience in a fundraising/development environment, preferably in a foundation, government, research, or university setting.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Solid MS Office and donor database skills. Experience with Salesforce preferred.
  • Strong detail orientation, organizational skills, and ability to effectively and independently manage competing priorities and confidentiality of financial information.
  • Working knowledge of direct mail, email, web, and other techniques and strategies of annual giving campaigns.
  • Skills in researching and organizing information to identify philanthropic patterns, tendencies, and relationships among individuals, corporations, and foundations. 
  • Direct experience planning and executing events and meetings.
  • Willingness to take on new responsibilities as the position evolves.
  • Must be a team player who excels in a collaborative work environment.
