Position: On-Air Talent                                                            Reports To:   Program Director

Mandate:  To competently* and professionally* provide continuity and surveillance information in a professional, knowledgeable and entertaining way and will be active in pre-show strategy and execution.

Objectives (by Responsibility)

Assist supervisor with coordination of traffic department and sales staff to expedite radio commercials and rotation of commercials according to the specifications requested by client and/or sales department.

  • Prepares the system for proper placement of commercials.
  • Calls clients and plays commercials for approval.
  • Files and organizes copy.
  • Performs additional duties in small stations, such as fill-in for on-air personality. 

On Air

  • Continuity

To ensure that appropriate continuity is maintained at all times while on the air. This includes:

  • Programming links

Set-ups and Transitions (music identification to co-host, or any pre-taped items etc.)

To appropriately re-enforce the radio station identity and program at all times. This includes:

  • Station call letters
  • Positioning statements
  • Creative Hooks
  • Cross Promotion
  • Back sells
  • Surveillance

To professionally (consistently appropriate) deliver all relevant information on an ongoing basis. This includes:

  • Time checks
  • Weather
  • Temperature checks
  • Event Information
  • Music Knowledge and Appreciation

To competently (effectively & efficiently) display your knowledge and enthusiasm about and for the music that is played. This includes:

  • In-depth knowledge of the music being played
  • Understanding listener’s tastes
  • Staying in touch with music and all related issues (research, analysis etc.).

Off Air

  • Planning

To contribute and support the creation of the show on a daily basis. This includes:

  • Participation in daily post-mortem and planning meeting
  • Participation in daily pre-show meeting.
  • Preparation

To appropriately implement all assigned duties from the producer on a daily basis. This includes:

  • Pre-show and live interviews
  • Contribution to comedy skits
  • Writing scripts
  • Attending Press conferences, functions and events
  • Researching background material.


To ensure that all relevant material for the show is competently prepared on a daily basis. This includes:

  • Assigned promotion mentions
  • Reviewing commercial logs for live tags
  • Scanning daily newspaper for any relevant items
  • Reviewing promo cards for possible on air use etc.
  • Public Appearances

To professionally (consistently appropriate) and competently (effectively & efficiently) appear in public when and where required on an ongoing basis. This includes:

  • Participation in station remote broadcasts
  • Preparation as required
  • Representation at charity events, community events etc.
  • Social Networking

Create and post original on-line content that meets company standards on social networking

Education and/or Experience

Associate’s Degree (A.A) or equivalent from two year college or technical school. Must have at least 2 years prior experience as an on air morning show host for morning show host position. Must have at least two years on air experience for all other on air positions. An equivalent combination of education and experience is desirable.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. To have the ability to write simple correspondence.  To have the ability to effectively present information in a clear and personable tone of voice on-air, and in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Reasoning Ability

To have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. To have the ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities

Ability to operate a digital recorder, audio-processing equipment (digital or analog), and a computer for general office functionality. Have good organizational and time management skills and the ability to work without direct supervision.  Ability to work evening, overnight and weekends.
