Work Site:         Washington, DC Metropolitan Area; Richmond, VA  

 

This position may work remote on a part-time basis in accordance with company policy and manager approval.

OVERVIEW:

The Sr. Director of Benefits is a self-starter who can independently complete a project and job duties from start to finish, is detail-oriented and enjoys interacting with people.  The incumbent will demonstrate a can-do attitude and thrive in a fast-paced workplace.  They will be a key member of the team and serve as a key advisor and internal expert on welfare benefits and incentive plans including medical benefits, FMLA, Workers’ Compensation, disability, and retirement plans.  Sr. Director will support the selection, implementation and administration of the organization’s benefits and wellness programs.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Benefits and Welfare Administration

  • Serves as a trusted advisor to the SVP of HR and leadership to provide strategic guidance that aligns benefit and incentive programs to organizational goals
  • Serves as a change agent driving participant behavior through providing attractive benefits plan design, enhancements, and education
  • Develops and implements benefit strategies to include informative workshops for the organization
  • Creates wellness initiatives and serves as an internal thought partner to design creative and exciting concepts
  • Serves as a key liaison with benefit brokers and vendors to maximize services and strong support to the organization  
  • Ensures the organization is performing best practices in accordance with established legal and fiduciary requirements
    • Responsible for completion and filing of benefit plans and audits to include but not limited to 401k NDT, 5500 execution and ACA filing
  • Provides forward-thinking support to assist employees with questions, conducts research, and resolves issues ensuring appropriate documentation
  • Acts as resident medical leave expert (FMLA and ADA) steering process of evaluation, documentation leading and engaging in the interactive process
  • Leads the benefit open enrollment process and communications strategy
  • Supports department with M&A initiatives as required
  • Supports crisis management process and fosters strong relationships with external vendors/consultants
  • Keeps current on federal, state, and local compensation and benefits laws and regulations to ensure Company compliance
  • Participates in special projects as directed by SVP, Human Resources

Compensation

  • Collaborates with department leads in support of conducting compensation studies and benchmarking
  • Develops reports for external agencies and vendors as needed

Staff Management

  • Provides direct oversight of direct report’s actions and ensures the consistent use of internal best practices of disciplinary actions that are measurable and documented in accordance with the department’s standards
  • Draft comprehensive job descriptions (direct reports) and conduct routine reviews of duties (annual) and document all changes
  • Recruit well-qualified talent and provide thorough training and support to ensure staff are providing high-quality deliverables
  • Demonstrates ability to lead, motivate and direct a team to include but not limited to:
    • Provide regular constructive feedback
    • Resolve issues/conflicts with diplomacy in a timely manner
    • Provide ongoing guidance and support for growth and development
    • Deploy effective coaching skills
    • Practical understanding of anti-harassment and discrimination laws 
    • Effectively administer performance reviews and corrective action plans as appropriate
    • Foster an inclusive work environment free of workplace harassment and bullying 
    • Complies with Urban One’s mandatory training and adheres to related course deadlines for self and direct reports

  • Superior written communication, ability to independently draft thorough correspondence, proofread, and edit using proper business writing techniques

  • Ability and willingness to handle highly stressful situations, including juggling multiple activities, prioritizing customer needs, and responding to crisis situations
  • Ability and willingness to work extended hours and be on-call for emergencies as needed
  • 15% travel and adhere to the travel and expense policy
  • Legally authorized to work in the US
  • Submit to a background check

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

BA/BS in human resources and/or related field preferred.  Requires 8+ years of progressive experience in benefit management and wellness design. CEBS or CBP certification or compensation experience is desired.
