Renewables Area Lead 

POWER Engineers is currently seeking an Area Lead to work in the Power Delivery Renewables Business Unit Group III Department. The successful candidate will report to the Department Manager and will be responsible for managing client relationships, client projects, and department staff performing design work, as well as assisting the DM with the department vision and financial aspects of the department operations. This position requires occasional travel to conferences, and internal business unit meetings.  The position requires a solid understanding of renewables system design and engineering, basic knowledge of the renewables market in the US, and the ability to lead and execute work in line with cross-divisional renewables market strategy as directed by the Department Manager (DM) and Business Unit Director (BUD).  Flexibility is available for a hybrid work environment (employee will need to live within driving distance of a POWER office).

Roles and Responsibilities:

The Renewables AL is responsible for contributing and managing to the department culture so that day‐to‐day activities produce a product consistent with POWER's mission statement, culture, the guidance of department management and the BUD to achieve the goals of the business plan, to maintain POWER's quality standard, adherence to our standards and procedures and most importantly to meet the needs of our clients. Key activities include, but are not limited to:

Leading Your Team:

1. Overall Leadership

  • Foster adoption of POWER’s Culture, Values and Mission. 
  • Serve as the direct supervisor for a portion of the RBU department staff under the supervision of the current Department Manager. Responsibilities include developing performance reviews, approving timecards, managing workload of direct reports, recruiting, and training new employees, and forecasting and managing financial performance of the department under the supervision of the Department Manager.
  • Act as trusted advisor to the DM to support the Renewables Business Unit
  • Identify and support the development of the next generation of leaders and technical experts.
  • Develop and maintain an identified group of entry to mid-level staff that are responsible for project execution and production within the department.
  • Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of resources and skill sets and focus improvement efforts where most needed.

2. Business Planning and Execution

  • Grow and manage relationships with renewables and/or microgrid clients.
  • Help to incorporate the overall strategy of the Region, Business Unit, and Division within the department’s everyday work.
  • Assist in monitoring utilization and Income From Operations (IFO) goals outlined in the Department business plan.
  • Foster innovation by supporting and promoting our KMP teams, Innovation team, and other BU initiatives. 

3. Projects

  • Continue to participate in production work, coordinating with your Department Manager on appropriate levels.
  • Aid in the planning and coordination of staff assignments, project resourcing, department workload, and workflows.
  • Perform and direct others in the detailed design of source to POI medium to high voltage collection systems, substations, and associated BESS, solar, and wind infrastructure, including one-line diagrams, elementary and wiring diagrams, Protective Relaying, Power System Planning Studies, Design Studies, Logic and Control Systems, SCADA, communications, conduit and cable sizing/routing, assisting with substation physical layouts, substation P&C design, preparing equipment specifications, proposal development, construction cost estimates, and project scheduling.
  • Promote a culture of properly utilizing the QA/QC processes (Green Books, Project Challenge Sessions, Org Charts, etc.).
  • Promote a culture of managing project scope, identifying Project Change Notifications (PCNs), and working with project managers to issue PCNs to our clients.
  • Promote a culture of managing schedules and quickly communicating required schedule changes to PMs and clients.

4. Personal

Building Your Team:

  • Engagement
    • Support an environment of respect within the Department, with focus on maintaining high employee morale.  Participate in and promote morale building activities such as beverage days, Burnouts, Outages, and other department initiatives.
    • Have a genuine interest in the personal and professional goals of your staff, such that it is clear and evident to them that you are invested in them. 
    • Conduct reoccurring biweekly one-on-one meetings with staff to discuss department and project work related questions or concerns.
    • Prepare and administer bi-annual employee performance reviews for your direct reports, one of which to be focused on career planning.  Utilize a variety of tools including peer review feedback and self-evaluation (where appropriate).  Work with the Department Manager (DM) to ensure that there is a consistent approach to evaluating staff performance within the department.
    • Monitor employee performance, set goals and expectations, and provide coaching and feedback to improve individual and team performance within the department.
    • Maintain regular career planning discussions with designated employees within the department.
  • Training
    • Continue to develop your own personal skills related to the successful management of other people.  Invest this same training and development into designated staff members within the department.
    • Develop consistent avenues for learning, including internal and external training activities, to promote our culture of learning and creating experts.
    • Mentor less experienced staff in renewables project execution.
  • Recruiting
    • Involve existing staff members to assist with college recruiting efforts for interns, co-ops and entry-level positions.

Required Education/Experience:

  • Five (5) + years of renewables, distribution, substation, or SAS-related industry experience
  • BSEE (BS in Electrical Engineering) or BSEET (BS in Electrical Engineering Technology) degree, from an accredited university preferably with a power option.
  • Professional Engineering license (PE) or ability to obtain within one year.
  • Experience with proposal development.
  • Experience with implementing and maintaining Corporate QA/QC requirements.
  • Understanding of applicable renewable project design standards and codes (IEEE, NEC, NESC, etc.).
  • Experience using the Microsoft Office software suite.
  • High emotional intelligence (self-awareness, motivation, empathy, social skills, self-regulation).
  • Strong listening skills.
  • Experience leading and managing small project teams.
  • Experience filling the role of project engineer and/or lead engineer for several projects occurring concurrently.
  • The candidate must have strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills in order to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in a team-based environment.

Desired Education/Experience:

  • Eight (8) + years of renewables, distribution, substation, or SAS-related industry experience.
  • Experience with, and established positive relationships with, renewables clients.
  • Experience with supervision of technical staff.
  • Experience with developing annual financial forecasts and managing the financial performance of a consulting engineering group.
