Senior Engineer (HVDC & facts)
POWER Engineers, Inc. is seeking a Senior Engineer HVDC&FCSTS to fulfill the functional role of an HVDC and FACTS SME and technical leader for POWER Engineers’ Power Delivery Division. The position will be based in POWER’s SCADA and Analytical Services (SAS) business unit and provide technical leadership for HVDC and FACTS technologies. This is a Remote position in Canada.
At POWER, our senior engineer has a thorough knowledge base, a skill set in specific disciplines (HVDC & FACTS), and broad knowledge of other disciplines. This person will serve as a technical specialist with the knowledge and expertise to provide consultation and guidance to project teams in a particular practice area. Typically supports multiple projects on complex technical challenges. Actively fosters knowledge management and provides mentoring. Develops and applies advanced engineering concepts and approaches to unique engineering problems. Many projects the Senior Engineer will work on are more complex and represent a significant portion of the company's resources.
This role focuses on working on important HVDC projects worldwide, integrating renewable resources, and delivering/controlling power to designated areas. As an HVDC & FACTS SME, you will support our clients by performing front-end engineering design activities, developing technical specifications, reviewing design submissions, witnessing factory acceptance tests, and supporting commissioning activities.
The position will also involve participation in business development activities and industry association technical subcommittees, writing technical papers, and preparing and presenting technical presentations. Roles and Responsibilities
This senior engineer position requires an extensive knowledge base and skill set in HVDC and FACTS technologies and some knowledge of other system study disciplines. Guides project teams on both technical and project matters with a significant client interface. Produces cost estimates and project schedules and coordinates the project deliverables.
This senior engineer develops and executes large tasks in complex projects representing a significant portion of the company’s resources, including other disciplines. Other responsibilities include but may not be limited to:
- Engineering expertise in the control and protection of HVDC & FACTS technologies, including power system phenomena commonly studied with HVDC/FACTS applications, hardware in the loop, factory acceptance tests, real-time simulator tests, and on-site testing & commissioning.
- Develop business with clients by applying advanced technologies, engineering concepts, and approaches to unique engineering problems.
- Focusing on the client's current needs and situations. Typically provides support to business development or pursuit activities.
- Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work on moderately complex projects.
- Working with clients to understand their fundamental interests, assisting in developing projects such as HVDC and FACTS while providing expert advisory services for advanced grid technologies.
- Actively participate in industry associations (e.g., CIGRE, IEEE, IEC) through WG and leadership roles, including participation in ISO and Reliability Councils technical as appropriate.
- Proactively providing guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, and applicable engineering codes.
- Guiding, mentoring, and training of junior staff in the area of HVDC/FACTS and other engineering disciplines
- Actively advancing knowledge management of the enterprise and providing mentoring
- Serving as a technical specialist with knowledge and skillset to provide consultation and guidance to project teams in a particular practice area. Typically supports multiple projects on very complex technical challenges.
- Actively coordinating with all other internal/external team members on complex projects
- Assisting with defining project schedules for a single discipline or may have responsibility for multiple disciplines.
- Assisting in developing, maintaining, and updating engineering standards. Providing technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines and deepening specific area expertise.
- Performing complex research and developing recommendations for equipment, control methods, and/or other alternative solutions
- Apply complex engineering calculations that follow standard methods and principles, including developing and applying advanced engineering solutions to complex problems.
- Overseeing data collection, assimilation, and management for engineering work
- Preparing a variety of complex engineering deliverables for multiple or mega projects
- Provide technical support to other groups in the company for strategic, organizational, and business planning aspects of our consulting businesses with utilities, project developers, and industrial clients.
- Managing budget, schedule, and quality requirements
- Assisting with developing a work plan for a given project.
Required Education/Experience
- Ten or more years’ applicable FACTS & HVDC experience
- Some ability to use electromagnetic transient software, Mathcad, MATLAB, and other calculation tools commonly used in power systems engineering.
- Strong knowledge of power systems engineering techniques for transmission planning, infrastructure design, and relay protection.
- Expertise with advanced grid technologies (HVDC, FACTS, BESS, and related IBR) and their specification, application, study, modelling, design, and operation, including but not limited to:
- FACTS technologies (e.g., STATCOM, SVC, Sync Condenser, Hybrid, and Series Compensation) dynamic reactive power or FACTS devices
- HVDC converter technologies (e.g., VSC, LCC), configurations, and application/control methods of grid following, forming, and firming.
- Able to work in substation site environment on occasion.
Preferred Education/Experience
- More than 11 years of relevant experience.
- Advanced graduate studies are preferred.
- P.E. and/or P.Eng. license preferred.
- Established relationships with OEM engineers/technical leads.
