Substation Physical Designer

Job Summary

POWER Engineers is currently seeking a Substation Physical Designer in the Power Delivery Substation Department of our Houston office. Flexibility is available to work remotely, hybrid, or onsite, depending on the candidate's location and preferences.

Responsibilities

• The position includes working within a team to complete complex and technically challenging aspects of electrical utility substation design and understanding and adhering to client standards.
• Perform the detailed Physical design of medium to extra high voltage utility substations. Typical designs include but are not limited to:
  • One-line diagrams
  • Physical layouts
  • Substation equipment selection
  • Substation general arrangement plans, sections, and elevations
  • Control building design and details
  • Cable and conduit plans and details
  • Ground grid design and details
  • Lightning protection design and details
  • Yard lighting design and details
  • Material lists
  • AC and DC systems calculations and sizing
• Work with engineers to develop drawing packages
• Coordinate designs with other disciplines such as Substation Protection & Control, Structural, and Civil
• Participate in quality assurance and quality control programs
• Contribute to engineering project scheduling and budget management

Required Education/Experience

• Associate's degree or equivalent technical education
• Extensive experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation
• Experience in electric utility substation physical design
• Electrical and mechanical reasoning skills and attention to detail
• Good command of the Microsoft Office Suite, with an emphasis on Outlook, Excel and Word
• Strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills in order to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel
• Legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship

Desired Education/Experience

• 4 or more years’ experience providing physical design for electric utility substation projects up to 500 KV
• Familiarity with Raster Design and/or Bentley Descartes
• Ability to produce applicable drawings from rough sketches, notes, client examples, vendor drawings, and such
• Ability to select materials based on technical requirements
