Position Summary
The California Teachers Association is one of California’s largest and most dynamic labor unions. As part of the CTA management team, the successful applicant will drive improvements in members’ working conditions by leading staff on our union’s communications team and supporting the expansion of site-based organizing, contract campaigns, door canvassing campaigns, membership recruitment, and other strategic initiatives.

The Assistant Communications Manager works alongside the manager of the Communications Department and the Associate Executive Director of the Communications and Research Division to advance the mission of CTA.  In-depth knowledge of and experience with labor movement communications, union organizing and contract campaigns; an ability to inspire union members, staff, and communities to support CTA goals; and a deep commitment to the labor movement and public education are paramount.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the Associate Executive Director of Communications and Research and the Communications Manager to develop and implement CTA's overall communications strategy.
  • Manages and coordinates digital strategy for CTA, including but not limited to websites, social media platforms, email, sms, video, and other digital tools.
  • Supervises and evaluates department staff, including performance reviews and evaluations.
  • Coordinates strategic communications campaigns and member outreach.
  • Manages CTA’s visual design, storytelling, and content message discipline across platforms and uses.
  • Develops strategic planning for communications programs and initiatives.
  • Develops advocacy tools and messaging to effectively reach CTA members, legislators, policy makers, media, and the public.
  • Develops and implements paid media campaigns across digital platforms.
  • Manages effective coordination and use of digital tools and technology to implement and advance the goals and objectives of the organization.
  • Provides training for members and staff and coordinates training programs for CTA leaders, members, and staff.
  • Performs other appropriate duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or higher degree and bilingual preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise with digital programs and technology used by CTA including but not limited to WordPress, Salesforce, Hustle, and Action Network.
  • Experience with print and/or digital design and creative project management.
  • Experience in management and leading and coordinating teams composed of diverse groups.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating or managing projects from idea and initiation through completion and follow-up.
  • Experience with print and/or digital design and creative project management.
  • Strong understanding of union and/or other membership-based organizations.
  • Experience with fast-paced situations, including contract campaigns, strikes and political campaigns, and crisis communications.
  • Experience in labor movement communications work preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with staff, leaders, members and the general public.
  • Broad understanding of the critical issues and problems facing unions and public education.
  • Demonstrated support for racial, social, and economic justice; worker's rights; and a well-funded public education system.
  • Adaptable and flexible. Able to adjust seamlessly and effectively to changing factors and conditions that impact CTA campaigns, projects and other union programs.
  • Experience in organizing and campaigning, with relentless drive to proactively surpass campaign/program goals under pressure and with the tenacity to tackle challenges head-on in a fast-paced, dynamic, and rapidly changing environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California driver's license.
  • Ability to work and travel regularly, including evenings and weekends.
