General Description
The California Teachers Association is one of California’s largest and most dynamic labor unions. In-depth knowledge of and experience with labor movement communications, union organizing and contract campaigns; an ability to inspire union members, staff, and communities to support CTA goals; and a deep commitment to the labor movement and public education are paramount.

The Digital Communications Specialist will be responsible for creating and curating engaging content across various digital platforms to support the California Teachers Association's (CTA) mission and initiatives. This role requires excellent writing and storytelling skills, a talent for creating compelling visual content across various mediums and a demonstrated ability to apply digital organizing principles to engage and mobilize target audiences in a campaign setting.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement digital organizing strategies to engage CTA members, the public and key stakeholders.
  • Create high-quality written, visual and multimedia content for CTA's website, social media channels, email campaigns and other digital platforms to support CTA programs and initiatives.
  • Use visual storytelling techniques to highlight the work of CTA members and the challenges facing public education.
  • Create visually compelling graphics, videos and multimedia assets to support digital campaigns and communication initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Communications team to ensure messaging alignment and brand consistency across all platforms.
  • Work with regional communications organizers and local chapters to develop and implement digital strategies for organizing and advocacy campaigns.
  • Monitor and analyze the performance of digital content and campaigns and make data-driven adjustments to optimize results.
  • Develop and execute digital communication campaigns across email, text, and other online channels to engage CTA members and supporters on key issues and initiatives.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of online events and webinars to educate and engage CTA members and the public.
  • Provide training and support to CTA members and staff on the use of digital tools and platforms for organizing and advocacy.
  • Provide support and answer inquiries from CTA members and staff regarding the use of digital tools, platforms, and content.
  • Identify and manage relationships with vendors for digital media production, design, and technology services.
  • Coordinate the development and distribution of digital content across CTA departments to ensure consistent messaging and branding.
  • Lead and manage various digital projects for CTA, from concept to execution, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Monitor and respond to online conversations about education and labor issues, ensuring that CTA's voice is heard.
  • Conduct comprehensive research and evaluation of emerging digital technologies, trends, and best practices, including hands-on testing and piloting of new tools, to advise on strategic applications and identify opportunities to enhance CTA's digital communication and organizing effectiveness.
  • Drive digital innovation by continuously researching and evaluating emerging technologies, digital trends and best practices, and leading the testing and piloting of new digital tools to continuously improve CTA's communication and organizing capabilities.
  • Analyze the performance of CTA's digital assets and programs, identify areas for improvement, and implement updates to optimize engagement and achieve communication goals.
  • Proactively identify digital challenges within CTA and collaborate with the digital team and relevant departments to lead the development and implementation of solutions that resolve these challenges and improve organizational processes.
  • Develop and deliver training to empower CTA members and staff to become effective digital advocates and online organizers.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive digital strategy to enhance membership engagement, recruitment, and retention across all digital platforms.
  • Assist with other communications and organizing tasks as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, design or a related field preferred.
  • Proven experience in digital organizing and content creation in a campaign setting. Labor movement communications work preferred.
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Strong visual communication skills and a demonstrated ability to create engaging visual content.
  • Experience leveraging data and research to inform content creation strategies and optimize content for audience engagement and campaign performance.
  • Experience with photography, videography and graphic design principles; skills in video editing and graphic design programs, including strong design fundamentals.
  • Experience in managing social media accounts and running online campaigns.
  • Experience using website content management systems to manage website content and email marketing platforms to develop and execute email campaigns. Skills in front-end web development (HTML, CSS) and UI/UX design and prototyping.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze digital campaign performance data and translate insights into actionable strategies and tactics.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Broad understanding of the critical issues and problems facing public education and unions in California.
  • Excellent communication skills, initiative and creativity.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with staff, leaders, members and the public.
  • Adaptable and flexible. Able to adjust seamlessly and effectively to changing factors and conditions that impact CTA campaigns, projects and other union programs.
  • Experience developing and implementing comprehensive crisis response systems. Ability to work in fast-paced situations including contract campaigns, strikes and political campaigns, and crisis communication.
  • Demonstrated support for racial, social, and economic justice; workers’ rights; and a well-funded public education.
  • Computer proficiency and the ability to learn and use the Association's software programs.
  • Ability to work and travel regularly on some evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California driver’s license.

*This position is in a bargaining unit represented by CSO. Salaries are established by a collective bargaining agreement. Step placement is also determined by the CTA/CSO Agreement.
