General Description
The California Teachers Association (CTA) is one of California’s largest and most dynamic labor unions. In-depth knowledge of and experience with labor movement communications, union organizing and contract campaigns; an ability to inspire union members, staff, and communities to support CTA goals; and a deep commitment to the labor movement and public education are paramount to this role.

The Digital Communications Organizer will be responsible for leading web strategy and development, creating and managing digital content and assets, and producing compelling visual content to support CTA’s mission and initiatives. This role requires technical website expertise, advanced graphic design skills, excellent writing and storytelling skills, and a demonstrated ability to apply digital organizing principles to engage and mobilize target audiences in a campaign setting. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive web and digital organizing strategies to engage CTA members, the public and key stakeholders.
  • Lead overall strategy, development, and maintenance of CTA.org and other assigned CTA digital properties, including content management, site performance monitoring, SEO optimization, and vendor coordination.
  • Develop editorial content calendar, train staff on website tools, and analyze metrics to improve user experience and engagement.
  • Manage CTA's digital asset management system including organization, maintenance, and user access.
  • Create high-quality written, visual and multimedia content including compelling graphics, videos and other assets for CTA's website, social media channels, email campaigns and other digital platforms to support programs and initiatives.
  • Use visual storytelling techniques to highlight the work of CTA members and the challenges facing public education.
  • Manage CTA's social media presence, engaging strategically in online conversations about education and labor issues to amplify CTA's voice and influence.
  • Manage CTA's email and text messaging communications strategies and content creation, developing member newsletters, campaign messaging, mobilization messages and strategic guidance for local chapters.
  • Collaborate across CTA departments to coordinate content development and distribution while ensuring messaging alignment and brand consistency across all platforms.
  • Work with regional communications organizers and local chapters to develop and implement digital strategies for organizing and advocacy campaigns.
  • Develop, execute and analyze digital communication campaigns across email, text and other online channels, making data-driven adjustments to optimize engagement with CTA members and supporters.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of online events and webinars to educate and engage CTA members and the public.
  • Provide training and support to CTA members and staff on the use of digital tools and platforms for organizing and advocacy.
  • Identify and manage relationships with vendors for digital media production, design, and technology services.
  • Lead and manage various digital projects for CTA, from concept to execution, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Research and pilot emerging digital technologies and best practices to enhance CTA's communication and organizing effectiveness.
  • Analyze digital performance, identify challenges and improvement opportunities, and collaborate with teams to develop and implement solutions that optimize engagement and improve organizational processes.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive digital strategy to enhance membership engagement, recruitment, and retention across all digital platforms.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, design, web development or a related field preferred.
  • Proven experience in digital organizing, web development and content creation in a campaign setting. Labor movement communications work strongly preferred.
  • Experience with front-end web development (HTML, CSS) and UI/UX design and prototyping.
  • Advanced proficiency in WordPress and other content management systems for website development and maintenance.
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills with proven ability to create persuasive, action-oriented content for diverse audiences including members, media, and the general public.
  • Strong visual communication skills and a demonstrated ability to create engaging visual content.
  • Advanced graphic design skills and principles including layout, typography, color theory, and brand consistency across digital and print materials.
  • Expert proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) or equivalent design software.
  • Experience with digital asset management systems (Frontify or similar platforms) including organization, metadata standards, and access permissions for team collaboration.
  • Experience with social media platforms including content creation, copywriting with ability to adapt voice and tone for different audiences, and community engagement to support organizational digital presence.
  • Experience creating email communications including newsletters, campaign messaging and strategic guidance material.
  • Experience using CRM platforms including but not limited to Salesforce and Action Network for member engagement and campaign management.
  • Experience leveraging data and research to inform content creation strategies and optimize content for audience engagement and campaign performance.
  • Experience capturing photo and video content and editing videos for digital platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze digital campaign performance data and translate insights into actionable strategies and tactics.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Highly organized with proven ability to drive and manage complex projects, timelines and calendars across large organizational structures.
  • Broad understanding of the critical issues and problems facing public education and unions in California.
  • Excellent communication skills, initiative and creativity.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with staff, leaders, members and the public.
  • Adaptable and flexible. Able to adjust seamlessly and effectively to changing factors and conditions that impact CTA campaigns, projects and other union programs.
  • Experience developing and implementing comprehensive crisis response systems. Ability to work in fast-paced situations including contract campaigns, strikes and political campaigns, and crisis communication.
  • Demonstrated support for racial, social, and economic justice; workers’ rights; and a well-funded public education.
  • Computer proficiency and the ability to learn and use the Association's software programs.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California driver’s license.
  • Ability to work and travel regularly on some evenings and weekends.

* This position is in a bargaining unit represented by CSO. Salaries are established by a collective bargaining agreement. Step placement is also determined by the CTA/CSO Agreement.
